Format: Paperback
Jesus' most characteristic and radical teachings lay in his parables. Barbara Garro has written a very helpful book that gives us a devotional journey through those parables, contemplating their truths and mysteries and their beauty. The author makes of this journey a true adventure, because she doesn't assume the reader believes or thinks any particular way when we begin nor obliges us to by the time we end her book. She speaks to us in an open, irenic style, laying out before us the text of each parable, the questions that it raises, the quandaries into which it leads the author (about which she is completely honest), and the hopeful message that each contains for her. She asks us to grapple with the meaning, just as she is actually doing as she writes her book. And to this end, she has clearly organized the book so that it keeps a regular rhythm, leading us in each chapter through sections on love, healing and salvation, unfolding insights for us as she goes and always challenging us to look inward and toward God.

The author suggests that you could read a parable a day, which is a reasonable enough pace. But given the helpful questions for thought, the written exercises and the "affirmations" to correlate with your own life, I think you could more profitably devote a week to each parable, reading and re-reading her chapter through the week, meditating on the author's good questions and carrying out the assignments. I particularly liked the existential, not academic, way in which she quotes from many sources like de Chardin, Ortega y Gassett, John XXIII, St. Seraphim of Sarov, St. Basil the Great, Fulton J. Sheen, Hillaire Belloc, Origen, Meister Eckhart, and others, providing us with actual nourishment from the history of Christian experience and thought. In this book, Barbara Garro has created truly effective spiritual exercises that will strengthen those who undertake this journey with her and her Jesus.

Review of From Jesus to Heaven with Love: A Parable Pilgrimage by Barbara Garro

Barbara Garro’s book From Jesus to Heaven with Love: A Parable Pilgrimage is a gift to anyone who hopes to learn more about Jesus and his teachings. It is an even greater gift to anyone who wants to learn more about their own faith and beliefs. Garro uses her personal experience and understanding of Jesus and his life to bring that life fully alive for her readers. Then she makes it easy for us to go deeper by offering a clear guide to our own spiritual travels. She maps our way. She invites us to think and feel. She gives us exercises that help us further our explorations of what we believe and why we believe it. She deftly employs biblical parables to accomplish all of this and that approach works. If you want to more know about your faith and yourself, I urge you to read this heartfelt book and follow its course in parables. Your life will be enriched by the effort.

I have had this book for sometime and wanted to tell Barbara how wonderful her words are, but she would turn around and tell me they came from Jesus, and she's right. She has taken time, years, to educate those to what Jesus has said and each and every every line has a meaning, yet so different for me as for you. Barbara would say to me, "Jesus knows what you need," and she might answer, but you have to talk to him, believe in him." I know each and every work within the pages can educate but open up your heart to a better tomorrow, understanding why we are here, and follow the words of Jesus. This is the time of year to invest in something meaningful for those you love.

Thanks Barbara, bless you.
Sincerely, Nancy Duci Denofio
