More About the Author

Jen's kitchen exploits started with a scrap paper "cookbook" at age 10. By age 17, she was making soups and simple meals for her musician husband. Urban homesteading stretched paltry paychecks, as Jen canned and pickled the fruits of her organic garden. On to establishing her own food business at age 25, Jen juggled raising kids with developing menus and simplifying recipes. Mentoring young employees at The New Deli as they've developed kitchen skills, Jennifer has seen new generations learn to prepare real meals with fresh ingredients. More recipes in the works!

5.0 out of 5 stars IABookReviews.com gave this a 10.0/10.0! May 5, 2013
By Brandon
Format:Paperback
Jennifer Cote's "From the Land of Milk and Honey" is a Devotional Cookbook. With Scriptures throughout the book, and the explanation of the scripture is a fantastic mix of recipes and faith. I tried some of the recipes, being not a good cook, they turned out really well. This, to me, makes the recipes sound and safe to make even if you're not the best cook (Let's be honest, I usually burn water...)

Some of the recipes included are for different soups, salads & dressings, main dishes, party foods & side dishes, different sauces (like BBQ, Tomato, Tahini, etc), and desserts (of course, this was my favorite section. I love desserts!).

This cookbook is more than just a cookbook though. It's a story of Jennifer's life and ambitions that she wanted to share with the world. When I picked up this book, given to me freely by the author in return for an honest review, I thought to myself: Why put Bible verses in a cookbook?

Jennifer answers this by a verse: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 "Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching...for a life that has God's approval. They equip God's servants so that they are completely prepared to do good things."

Jennifer, I couldn't agree more!

Rating: 10.0/10.0

Review: I gave this Devotional Cookbook a 10/10 because of two things. 1. I can actually cook with these recipes, which says a lot for the preciseness of the recipes, and 2. The photography in the page's backgrounds were absolutely stunning and flows so well with the explanations of why she included a particular Scripture. I will be using this cookbook for a long time to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christian Cookbook December 18, 2012
Format:Paperback
From the back cover: "After twenty years of cooking at The New Delhi Sandwich Shop in Pinole, California, chef Jennifer Cote reveals how different flavors, textures, and techniques combine to produce memorable meals efficiently. From the Land of Milk and Honey contains recipes for every occasion, plus: Spiritual nourishment, with bite-sized insights about Christian living, gardening, diet, raising a family, and homemaking." Couldn't have said it better myself, so I didn't.

Reading this cookbook felt good. It was refreshingly good. I loved the scriptures and short devotional on almost every page. This book contains much wisdom.

The recipes included are lots of classics like homemade stock, salad dressings, salsa, pesto, tomato sauce as well as new recipes with a twist such as recipes for the much less common proteins, duck and shrimp.

I found most of the recipes to be what I consider to be "healthy". The healthiest way to eat to begin with is to cook your food yourself, so right off the bat this book is ahead of the game. I found almost no use for the dessert chapter as I don't encourage the eating of sweets and these recipes had not been tweaked to make them healthier but since they come from a chef, I'm sure they taste great for the occasional treat. (The trick would be to make sure it is truly only occasional--as in an occasion, like a birthday or holiday.)

There were a couple of recipes in particular that I was very happy to see and that I am going to make good use of. Recently I've been unhappy and discouraged with the selection of cream soups and barbecue sauces in my local supermarket. The cream soups have flour and MSG and all the barbecue sauces have high fructose corn syrup in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and Delicious Recipes! December 21, 2006
By Alyssa
Format:Paperback
Jennifer is down-to-earth and easy to relate to. Her recipes are easy and delicious. There's something for everyone in here from homemade dressings to great pasta dishes to the most amazing peanut butter brownies you will ever taste. I often look through her recipes and think to myself, "oh, that's how you do it!" Nearly everything from scratch and its just incredible. If you are ever going through Pinole, CA, stop off at the New Deli and try some of Jen and her husband's amazing food. My husband and I love that they always have fresh soups and yummy specials and chocolate chip cookies I crave on a regular basis. Honestly wish we lived closer! Great people and great food. Would definitely recommend this cookbook. 5 stars!
