I had to write a book review for my graduate studies in education and I chose this book. My topic was "The Conversos' influence on the Kabbalah." Much of "From Metaphysics to Midrash" is on this topic, however, in the beginning of the book, an introduction to Lurianic Kabbalah is presented. I've studied many texts on Kabbalah; Dr. Maggid presents these ideas in the clearest and most organized manner I have ever seen. Topics that seemed unfathomable became more understandable. Although the material is very complex, Dr. Magid does an excellent job at relaying the information in an understandable manner; he writes clearly and eloquently. I highly recommend "From Metaphysics to Midrash", it's a great introduction to Lurianic thought, and an insightful historical commentary as well.

I would give this brilliant treatise on Kabbalah five stars if it weren't for the author's aspirations to use William Buckley-esque stilted vocabulary. It renders profound subject matter somtimes incomprehensible. The author's insistance on sprinkling words like "eschatological" "ontological" "recondite" into every other sentence undermines this work. This book comes off like a paper written by a college student who is trying to impress his professor by using lots of big words.
