One interesting facet that you should be looking at is the "baseline standard admissions criteria" set by schools.

"Acceptance to top schools seems nearly impossible, almost as if reserved for the godlike few with a long list of superhuman qualities," begins Kim Palacios, an attendee of renowned schools, admissions committee member and admissions officer at a top university. But as Palacios observes, Harvard, Yale, and Waldorf aren't just for whiz kids and wunderkinds- competitive schools, from preschool to grad school, rank candidates similarly. Thanks to this lively, crystal-clear guide, a prestigious academic career can be yours-or your children's- too. It's a lot like playing the market, and the years Palacios spent studying trends pays off in this well-laid out format. Palacios shows that competitive admissions are not just about academia- it's about values, projecting a favorable image, and finding your unique angle and expressing it to the school. Everything from acing the interviews to follow-ups and thank-yous are covered, including all the elements of great answers, identifying the types of questions you'll be asked, and knowing what questions to ask yourself. Interestingly, Palacios notes that sometimes what school are looking for encompasses concepts that are rarely articulated, alerting the reader to the need to look out for buzz phrases. The book also covers methods of thinking that help you choose a school and stresses the importance of good judgment, not taking everything you read at face value. "The internet is an unregulated place where anybody, whether credentialed or not, can say anything about any topic," writes Palacios. The broad array of topics doesn't end there- there's also a section on the value of social media, targeting mistakes, when to take the tests, and understanding costs. There's even a part about handling rejection and reapplying, but with this wealth of information, you won't need it. Palacios provides a surefire method for ensuring your academic career is a glittering one.

This is an economically challenged time when all schools are under pressure to remain in existence: it is also a time when schools at all levels of education are forced to limit their enrollment due to lack of sufficient funding to support a full curriculum. And of course the corollary to that conundrum is the challenge that faces students (and parents) to gain admission to these hampered schools. What better time to publish this book of coaching by Kim Palacios than now?

Palacios goes through all the steps in the terror of applying to schools: she has not only been through those tricky steps of taking entrance exams, facing grade performances in the preparatory schools, writing meaningful `resumes' or essays as part of the process of seeking admission to the private schools, but having been successful in those lines of fire she has also served on the admissions committees of schools, reading innumerable application forms, interviewing potential students and making the decision as to who is accepted and who is rejected. The result of this background is what makes this book ring with a sincerity and no-nonsense approach she offers in a completely accessible and realistic manner.

Aside from the opening information on the importance of grades, scores on exams, and terse essays on why the seeking student finds the right words to convince the admissions committee that they are a `fit', Palacios soundly steers her reader through the concept that `on size doesn't fit all' - that `I will be honest with you. Lessons about being authentic in your application are the trickiest ones to learn, but also the most important. This book fully addresses making choices and statements that are authentic to you.

From Preschool to Grad School: Strategies for Success at Any Level of Competitive Admissions by Kim Palacios is a well written and informative book of its kind. Getting the inside scoop regarding applications, admission, process and requirements has allowed me to better understand the entire procedure from the inside-out. This isn't a "how to book", it's much better than that, it's an inside guide of the operations of admissions, whether you're planning to enroll your child into a private preschool or grad school this book guides you through it all. Not only does the author explain why the admission standers are set, she also give specifics details and escorts you through the entire process. Just reading about some of the issues I myself, was face and getting a fresh perspective on how to go about it, has alleviated some of the weight the admission process had place on my shoulders. Next time I walk into St. A****** private school's admission office, I'll be prepared. This book is a must read and a wonderful reference guide that actually helps.

Does a lifetime of work simply boil down to whether you complete and submit your application to a college, university, or grad school online or on paper? Perhaps it could, but this is just one of the many things you'll have to think about when considering going to any school, let alone actually getting into one. This book is no panacea for everything that could go wrong with the process, but certainly is worth the time to sit down and give it the once over. Standing out is one facet of your persona that seems to come up again time and time in books of this nature, but Kim Palacios simply states, "If you're funny, be funny. If you're something else, be that. Stand out by bringing more of you to the table." Yet, if you are serious about getting into grad school, you must be realistic.

The realism begins with one thing ... you must know what all educational institutions from preschool to grad schools are looking for. Palacio, who was an admissions officer, has exposed "patterns found across application processes and deconstructs the vital role they play in candidate success." If you are qualified, but you can't leap tall buildings in a single bound, just what can you do to get into your school of choice? Study. One interesting facet that you should be looking at is the "baseline standard admissions criteria" set by schools. In other words, you have to not only have the academic qualifications, but need to study the market.
