Editorial Reviews

Where some albums have torturous histories, this one has spent more time on the rack than most! When Play Dead's 1984 LP From The Promised Land was reissued in the early '90s, it was re-titled Resurrection, for no good reason that anyone can remember. Now, Anagram Records have put the track selection back as intended, and re-instated 'Weeping Blood' (absent from Resurrection) to the running order along with nine bonus tracks. You now have, effectively; the album the band wanted you to hear first time round! Anagram.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic gothic rock outing May 23, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Play Dead was an excellent british band that flourished in the 80s indie/post-punk/gothic rock areas..... with a number of solid releases.

From the Promised Land is perhaps their best, and this is an excellent version of it: remastered, in original track-order, and packed with b-sides and remixes.

Buy this and realize that all that mall-rock metal that kids are calling "goth" these days is nothing but commercial "emo" garbage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy! Holy! February 5, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Play Dead are one of the most under-rated bands of the 80's and this is their finest work. I hesitate to call them a goth band, their appeal should be far wider than that, but if you like Killing Joke or The Sisters of Mercy then you are sure to like this. What I enjoy about this album in particular is the bass work - it drives most of the songs and is very funky on a lot of tracks. The guitar is as sharp as broken glass and the pummeling drums drive it forward like a freight-train. The distinctive, almost wailing vocals top it all off to perfection. Pleasureland is one of my all-time favourite songs yet here it fails to stand-out much from the excellent pieces around it. John Fryer's production is almost flawless.
This CD features the full album, followed by a fairly comprehensive set of bonus tracks from the era. These tracks lend more variety to this release, with the synth-bass driven Conspiracy and Sacrosanct, which points the way to the band's next release [Company of Justice - also brilliant].

4.0 out of 5 stars starts out with a bang January 2, 2013

it seems so long ago, back in 96, for less than $5, i found shine, and the first flower on vinyl at a flea market, and i hadn't yet realized the treasure i haphazardly stumbled on. only after the fact, i realized what i had, quite some time after both were eventually lost or stolen, and when i finally found from the promised land on cd (w/bonus tracks) i was nothing short of ecstatic....isabel and torn on desire are by far some of the most powerful/catchy tracks by any artist of this era, or in the genre, which set the mood for the entire album. Additionally, I am ever so grateful that From the promised land includes all the bonus tracks (otherwise nearly impossible to find , though not all are worth the effort.) and includes Pale Fire (which is one track that stands out most, and is unavailable on any other release currently available).
If only it included my favorites from first flower, i would find it complete, however, For new comers, or long time fans, this album is a must have.
