This review is mixed. I purchased this book after seeing it in a Dutch bookstore assuming it would be a strong Netherlandish account of the Golden age of 17th century art. After purchasing it and reading it I found it less scholarly than I had hoped for. It does offer some fascinating details of daily life and the role of art in a vibrant culture. It does help explain the Dutch tendency toward the avoidance of excessive show in palaces and such. But the text was far too short and in the end left me wanting three or more times the amount of analysis. The art is well chosen but even here the reproductions are dark and show a lack of finesse on the part of the printer. Unfortunately, there are better books on this subject on the market.
