Product Description

In this DVD, David Levy demonstrates the Adobe Photoshop techniques that he uses to create environ- ments for the entertainment industry. He specifically reveals the custom brush creation techniques that have been perfected by a small group of passionate artists in Montreal. From two basic brushes, David shows you how to develop your own library of custom brushes that will allow you to gain speed and efficiency during your speedpainting process. Beginning with examples such as mountains, forests and clouds, David then leads you through the creation of a concept art painting, from rough sketches to a final piece with environment, vehicles and characters. Using texture brushes, you will then learn to refine and complete the painting without losing the original dynamism and composition of the sketch. This DVD includes the set of brushes that are created in the lecture, as well as the layered PSD files.

I've been watching the very innovative digital painting techniques David and his colleagues have been working on over the last several years with great interest. Having now employed the ideas into some of my own work I'm even more excited and eager to be able to offer to you his techniques through this newest DVD addition to our library. --Scott Robertson - Founder, Design Studio Press

To be fair, David Levy's content is excellent. He outlines some unique and original techniques that I've never seen anywhere before. His use of custom brushes tweeked out to be non-uniform elements is downright brilliant. As he says, none of this makes you a better artist, but it will help an already good artist get faster. Unfortunately, you need some competance as an artist before walking into this stuff.

As for the previous reviewer's complaints about the content's coding on the DVD... well, he's not wrong, but that isn't David Levy's fault.

The problems with playing the DVD notwithstanding, this is some of the most amazing work I've seen and he teaches the student everything, holding nothing back. The pace is pretty quick, so you may have to play through a couple of times to catch everything. I learned more about brushes and how to use them than I have from any other source. Worth every penny.

I learned a great deal from this DVD. If you're looking to increase speed for your painting, this is a great asset. I don't think anywhere do they go as in depth into brushes as this.

I purchased this DVD and couldn't wait to jump in and learn the tricks used by one of my favorite conceptual artists. Unfortunately getting to the content on the DVD is a total hassle and definitely not worth the price of admission. The DVD isn't coded nor does it play in a normal DVD format. The "DVD" is just a holding medium for all of the junk menu files on it. The actual movie files are in Quicktime, which is fine by itself, but they play though an interface built in Macromedia Projector with Flash elements. Every time I try to run a tutorial video from this menu the interface crashes and the whole thing shuts down. I haven't yet been able to view a tutorial using the native build of the "DVD".

I had to set my computer folders to "show hidden files" and extract the 16 separate Quicktime movies and view them independently from the DVD and its extravagant looking menu system, that doesn't seem to work at all for me. After 2 hours of messing with codecs, Quicktime installs and uninstalls I gave up, extracted the Quicktime movies and watched them independently from the DVD itself, direct from my hard drive. The overall experience hasn't been good from the start.

But David Levy is slowly making me forget all the hassle I've had to go through to dig out his great tutorials from this "DVD". The actual tutorials themselves are great, if you're savvy enough to find them, extract them, and play them, and his techniques are a wonder to watch. For anyone who wants to watch and learn a master at his craft create such wonderful work then the instruction he gives in these movies is for you. But beware! Getting to the movies themselves is almost has complex as the work this artist is showing you. It's not Mr.
