SYNOPSIS

New York City. Fall, 1995. Below the sidewalks of Times Square is a strip club where beautiful women work the pole for money at night. But beyond the Main Stage, and behind the Men s Room door you ll find Shoes, a bathroom attendant who offers a different kind of performance.

After three years on the job, Shoes has mastered the art of giving advice, compliments or a sympathetic ear to his many visitors all for the sake of getting as much cash as possible into his tip bowl. But on the night of his three-year anniversary at the club, Shoes customers and coworkers start to make him take a look at his own life. Will Shoes learn to take some of his own advice?

Based on the real life story of writer-director-star George Griffith, From The Head is a truly original film that shows it s never too late to stop your life from going down the toilet.

From The Head is one of those rare treasures of independent cinema. Although it takes place almost entirely in the confines of a strip club bathroom, every frame of this film is beautiful to watch. With masterful cinematography and a multitude of absorbing performances (some funny, some shocking, some downright impressive), Griffith ties everything together with a poetic, deliberate touch. The whole thing feels purely cinematic. Watch it - films like this are hard to come by.

'From the Head' is a breath of fresh air. Original, artfully crafted, and entertaining - if you're a fan of thoughtful independent films you're in for a treat.

I can't say it any better than the world renowned film-maker/director David Lynch does:
"It is beautifully written. Beautifully directed. Beautifully acted. Beautifully filmed."

Saw this debut in Tribeca last year. Fabulous characters. What Sherwood Anderson did for Winesburg, Ohio in the 1920s, Griffith has done for NYC of the 1990s...using a spare, unsentimental style to evoke the loneliness, longing and brotherhood that exists within the walls of the men's room of an underground club on Times Square. His approach is unflinching but compassionate and never cheap; this is a movie to watch with friends. There's a reason David Lynch calls From the Head beautifully written, acted, directed and filmed. If you are a fan of modern cinema this is one not to miss.

Truly exceptional performance pieces on the independent pictures circuit are not as easy to find as some critics or purveyors of Sundance would have you believe. Most that get hawked end up being really too specific to a particular subject matter for my tastes, and they lack a real-world charm along with a real-world situation to be honestly memorable. Again, this isn't always the case, but, as the true indie circuit has started more and more to embrace mainstream story conventions, a great stand-out piece performed by an actor tends to get lost in the shuffle or completely ignored in favor of the latest `indie' love-fest or political tripe.

FROM THE HEAD boasts a solid central performance by George Griffith. It may not change anyone's life, and it may not break down any barriers in our civilization, but it's a straight forward presentation of a man who - whether he chooses to believe it or not - finds himself in conflict with who he is and what he has become despite his ongoing insistence that he's alright with everything.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and characters. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last three paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

For the last three years, "Shoes" (played/directed/written by George Griffith) is the men's bathroom attendant at a big city strip club. Each night, he meets and greets and treats a growing assortment of oddball characters as they venture in and out of his `office.

It was a different perspective on what goes on in Night clubs. It was very real in the types of characters that you find in these types of places!!!
