Editorial Reviews

From the Author

"This book means a lot to me. It took years to write, but I'm so happy I did. Sharing my story as a motivational speaker is a great outlet to help people and so is the addition of a book. By sharing my experiences, I hope that each reader can take at least one thing away and use it to make a positive change in their life."

About the Author

John Tartaglio is a professional motivational speaker who has traveled across the nation telling his story. His mission is to inspire people to pursue what they value and, in doing so, allow them to see that they can achieve anything they want. Only five years after being told that he would never walk again, in November 2009 John became the first person with no legs ever to run a marathon. John, a 2009 graduate of Fairfield University, will be an MBA graduate from the University of Connecticut in 2014. He loves competing in triathlons, road races, and cycling events and spending time with his wife and daughter along with other family and friends.

Andrew Chapin always dreamed of being a published author, working tirelessly to hone his craft and realize this goal. In 2010, John Tartaglio offered him the break he was looking for-a chance to develop a book about John's life, an idea that eventually spawned FROM TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH. Andrew, who majored in English and graduated from Fairfield University in 2009, recently completed his MS in adolescent English education at Iona College. He currently teaches middle school English at Thornton-Donovan School in New Rochelle, NY. Thankful for the family and friends who have enabled him to pursue his passion, Andrew looks forward to the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.

From Tragedy to Triumph is a story that carries the common theme of character failure followed by the uncommon theme of character redemption; the only twist is… it’s a true story. John Tartagilo’s inspirational account is told his way, through his words and with the help of Andrew Chapin’s writing. This isn’t just a story about one man’s capability to overcome a serious disability, but a message to everyone about pursuing goals and dreams despite the immense obstacles positioned in their way. Tartagilo’s voice combined with Chapin’s words motivates the readers from start to finish. This story will make everyone rethink their excuses in life, and teach us all the true meaning of never giving up.

As a parent from the Foran Community and my niece being good friends with John, I thought I knew most of his story until I read this book!! This book is about strength, hope and inspiration. Your everyday challenges will become a little easier after reading this book. Please... buy this book, keep it by your side, and when things seem just a little overwhelming, read a chapter or two; things may not seem so bad after all. I applaud you John T., you are remarkable!

This is one of those books that you just cannot put down. John creates a beautiful picture of his struggles through his many milestones and proves that you can LITERALLY do anything you put your mind to if you combine heart and hard work. What an inspiration to anyone who crosses his path. I laughed and cried while reading. I would recommend this book to all readers no matter what their reading preference.

I was delighted to read about John Tartaglio's journey into adulthood.

The decisions and actions he recounts and the path he's forged - moment by moment, step by step - in the face of huge physical trauma and radical and initially daunting changes to his body are more than testament to his personal strength, mental discipline, generosity of spirit, and abundance of energy.

In this book, John gives us all a tremendous gift. He maps a simple path of life that everyone can appreciate and benefit from, if only we dare to follow! I am so impressed and inspired by John's message and his personal story of boundless growth. He offers his unique journey as an example of what we all can enjoy, if we only imagine what is within, work it out into the world, and share our strength and spirit with each other. John does not simply survive. He thrives. And he shows us each and all the way.

I saw the story of John on the TV and felt I had to order the book. When it arrived I gave the book a glance and decided that
I was not up to reading it. Several weeks went by and I picked up the book and could not put it down. This is a very inspirational
book about a 17 year old who faced a terrible disease head-on. It is a VERY POSITIVE story about how this young man with a tremendous amount of courage had a goal of walking at his high school graduation to get his certificate. The book is very well written and is very inspiring .... as the note on the back cover says "his disability did not define him, he defined his disability".
Read this book and I am sure you will like it. Jerry a.k.a "POGO - Shrine Clown"

Strength. The first word that comes to mind when describing this story. As you read John's story, you come to realize that the tragedy that catapulted him to his triumph is so small compared to the life it helped create for him. From an ordinary life to an extraordinary life. John demonstrates great strength not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually. This book teaches us not to let those tragic moments in life define us, but to push us into the better person we are to become, and to "use failure as motivation" towards greatness.

Before reading this book John is someone I have admired for his courage and his ability to rise above what has happened to him. He made a choice to not let this tragedy define him!!!!! He is truly an inspiration to all who meet him, all who will read this book and all who have the honor of knowing him. Everyone should read this book, keep this book and give this book as a gift....and we all should strive to be motivated by John's courage each and every day.
John thank you for being such an inspiration.

There are lots of inspiring stories out there if you look for them; you hear stories of resilience and of people overcoming adversity, and that's all lovely, but at times I find that such stories can feel far off, as if it's hard to put yourself in that person's shoes and really take away the lessons they are trying to put out there and integrate them into your own everyday perspective on life. Having had recently spoken to John in a series of interviews and written a piece about him, reading his memoir was on my to-do list. Maybe it was because I had made that connection with John, had heard him tell his side of the story and been able to ask him questions about it, or because I sort of see him as someone who's not so distant a figure, knowing that he lives in the same state and that he shares my alma mater, but for whatever reason, his story felt all the more real and powerful to me. How he came out of his hardship with such an astoundingly positive outlook really made an impression on me. I love his message, too - that we cannot and should not compare the personal adversities that we all face, because we all have them, no matter what they are; instead, we really should focus on how we deal with them, how hard we work to overcome them. To be fair, this book is not necessarily perfect literature, but it is absolutely a incredibly strong and inspiring personal story. I was blown away by John's relentless focus and belief in himself, and I hope he continues to get his message out there to people who need to hear it.
