Biography

Since this Savannah, Georgia, United States quintet first formed in early 2001, worrying about genre limitations has never been a priority. Taking musical chances, however, always has been. While Kylesa are as heavy as any band out there, they are beholden to no one scene and no preconceived notions of what heavy music should be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cuts From The Crypt December 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Bands that are truly prolific have a tough problem. What music do you keep and what music to discard or re-work. Kylesa have taken a problem and made it a pretty awesome album! If you're expecting the sleak, or prepped up version of Kylesa fans have grown accustomed to over the last two albums, think again. This may be a swansong, or chapters' end to the super heavy, gut churning, powerhouse sludge kick the band started their career with. These songs are not incomplete, nor irrelevant, only powerful and emotional. The unfettered punk rock touch gives these tunes just enough underground edge to stop the hipsters from noticing, but lets the band shed the energy of youth in a new and exciting way. I hope there is still some lead left in Kylesa's pencil, and this doesn't mean the end of the sludge metal leanings this band excels in. But also do not think of this as a collection of outtakes, or half brained ideas that haven't been worked to Kylesa's usual brand of perfection. In fact, just experience this as a treasure trove of undiscovered goodies, blasting and chugging along through the underground! I actually like this better than Spiral Shadow! These aren't B-sides, they are finally completed A material.

From the Vaults is not representative of Kylesa's best material, but that does nothing to diminish this album's overall value. If you are already a fan of the band, this is a must own, if only to have their excellent cover of "Set a course..." in your library. If you are new to their sound, or just a casual sludge rock listener, you might be better served by Spiral Shadow, Static Tensions, or the forthcoming Ultraviolet (which is excellent). I enjoyed this album immensely, but it is a bit uneven, which is to be expected given the varied chronologies of the songs included. Overall, this is 4 to 4.5 star stuff. Plenty to love for the dedicated fan, and an easy buy decision at ~$5.00 for the mp3 album.

5.0 out of 5 stars KYLESA!!!! January 27, 2013

Kylesa are great in whatever they do. This vaults release is no exception. The cover of Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun is monstrous and awesome. The rest of the disc is pretty tasty too. Not recommended for Kylesa virgins, but if you have their other albums, go get this one!
