Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book doesn’t rely on outdated theories about pack leadership with ‘alpha dogs’ attempting to achieve world domination. From Wags to Riches beautifully illustrates what modern behavioral science tells us: the most effective leaders (dog or human) don’t force their will on others—they find out what motivates their followers and help them make good choices."
—Victoria Stilwell, world-renowned dog trainer and host of Animal Planet’s "It’s Me or the Dog"

"Bob Vetere has been a professional champion of a surprisingly resilient sector of our economy: pets. We may scrimp on ourselves, but we'll always find a way to afford the best food for Fido. Now, with From Wags to Riches, he explains how business success flows from our understanding—and adopting—some of the same traits animals use to win our devotion. A fun read for alpha CEOs as well as bystanders at the corporate dog run!"
—Michael Schaffer, author of One Nation Under Dog

“In this fun read, Robert Vetere brilliantly develops this metaphor between dog-human relationships and solid, collaborative business practices by offering examples from his own fascinating experiences as a successful businessman. Even if you’re not a business executive or MBA student, From Wags to Riches offers lessons on business (and life) that everyone should know.”
—Dr. Alan Beck, Director, Center of the Human Animal Bond, Purdue Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University

“I am a dog lover for over 58 years and have been a business entrepreneur for the past 30 years. How Bob has ‘connected the dots’ between the similarities of dogs, people, relationships and business is just phenomenal. Every MBA student, every executive looking to move ahead and maybe any manger struggling with responsibility, along with anyone who loves dogs and business, needs to read this book.

Every chapter is absolutely illuminating and intuitive. At the end of the day, From Wags to Riches was like eating comfort food…made me feel warm and cozy. We all can learn a lot from this well-written and entertaining book.”
—Thomas A. Cook, Managing Director and CEO, American River International, LTD

I also really enjoyed parts of the book that explain how our dogs help us to be better parents and provide so much more than a family pet for our children.

His words reminded me of the unconditional love I enjoy from my faithful companions, and how there is truly much to learn from them.

As someone who has managed at least 100 people over time, is an executive coach and competes in dog sports, this book appealed to me on many levels. Mr. Vetere's book reveals a humane as well as practical approach to managing people and dog training. With several suspect (dominance-based) dog trainers receiving attention and managers and workers crushed by ever-increasing demands for productivity, the simple kindness and positivity of the book is a relief -- and a proven way to achieve your goals.

Most workers are conscientious people who want to do well. Appealing to them in a positive way is the best way to win their enthusiastic and dedicated cooperation and attitude. For any manager who prefers your employees approach work positively and with some enthusiasm despite the demands, this is a trrific primer.

I've read books on management and teamwork since before I got into veterinary school over 30 years ago and my bookshelves still sag from the volumes. Vetere's incredible new book "Wags to Riches" is a unique, fresh look at management, motivation, teamwork and self-improvement and is my new "pick of the litter." In these topsy-turvy times we all need an edge, a lift, a new strategy to thrive and not just survive and this book will make you, your career and life better. Order "Wags to Riches" today --- for yourself, or as a gift --- doctor's orders! :-)

It's absolutely appalling that a "big wig" feels it is ok to steal the idea of another. This book is a stolen idea of Kim Kape's book "From Wags to Riches". The author didn't even have the decency to change the name to make it LOOK like his own work. I hope the author of this book feels good about himself because Kim's book was written both for and to help animals. The proceeds of Kim's book helped to benefit the 501(c)3 NO-KILL rescue she runs called In Harmony With Nature that houses over 70 animals including wolfdogs, dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and more.

I feel he author of this book should at least TRY to make amends for his outright theft of intellectual property and he can start by helping to fund a new 30 acre property the rescue would like to purchase to help expand their impact on saving the lives of animals.

SHAME ON YOU! In 2008 Kim Kapes, author of From Wags to Riches used the theme of how our dogs teach us the most important principals of becoming better human beings. I would believe that you probably came across her book on your conference circuit. It is shameful enough that you used her book idea, but to steal her book title is unbelieveable! Again, SHAME ON YOU! If you would do this, how ethical are you in business dealings?

The same idea was used in a book also titled "From Wags To Riches", by Kim Kapes which was published in late 2008. Kim Kapes' book is about understanding your dog, and how that can teach you to become a better person. Robert Vetere did not use an original idea, he failed to even come up with an original title.

This book can be very helpful, interesting and insightful for everyone from CEOs to everyday moms. The comparison made between treating and praising your dog throughout the day and treating and praising your employees throughout the day is excellent! I also really enjoyed parts of the book that explain how our dogs help us to be better parents and provide so much more than a family pet for our children. As the mom of a 7 month old, I know how much our dog plays an important role in our family life as well. It's definitely a light, easy read that is great for talk around the water cooler or dinner table.

Bob Vetere got this one right.

In a book rich in science, anecdotes and personal touches, he shows us what all of us who live with and love dogs have known our whole lives - they give more than they take, they teach more than they learn, and they are an indispensible part of our world. Bob weaves an enjoyable and lasting metaphor of business relationships (indeed all human interaction) as ehose in a dog pack. If dogs, in all their insight and wisdom wouldn't tolerate a certain personality or behavior, why in the world should we? If dogs act, and encourage others to act, in a certain way, it is likely the right way to treat others and we should follow suit.

Bob also reminds us what it is to be most human, ironically by showing us the heart of what dogs do. Great stuff and very fun to read.

I'd highly recommend this book for anyone in business, not just for yourself, but for your whole "pack".
