Book Description

May 15, 2012
In the span of forty-eight hours, socially awkward valedictorian, Kylie Flores and conceited jock, Max Langston, who've never spoken in four years of high school, will find themselves kidnapped, taken over the Mexican border, married and falling in love. Kylie's best friend, Will, Max's girlfriend, Lily and Max's wingman, Charlie are the unlikely cavalry charged with rescuing them. Against all odds, this crew must find their way back over the border in time for graduation and for Kylie to give her long awaited valedictorian speech, without killing each other en route.

Hilarious and poignant, FROM WHAT I REMEMBER blends high-octane adventure, romance and coming of age. No one is exactly who they seem here and by the end of their road trip together, they will all be changed in ways they never could have imagined.

FROM WHAT I REMEMBER was recently nominated for a YALSA Reader's Choice Award. Film rights bought by Paramount Pictures.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It's no surprise that both Kramer and Thomas share common roots in the film industry. Their love of the medium comes through not only in Kylie and Will's passion for quoting movies but also in the fast-paced action sequences that seem made for the big screen." - Kirkus Review

"...the quick pace and the hot-and-cold relationship between Kylie and Max will keep readers interested and rooting for them until the very end. Far from flawless, the characters seem real." School Library Journal

"This has all the right ingredients for an engrossing summer read... Pack it in the beach bag along with sunscreen and shades, take a break from ACT prep, and put a Do Not Disturb sign on the worry side of your brain." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"This book made me laugh, cry and swoon; sometimes all at once." YA Books Central

"From What I Remember's charm resides largely in its various characters' viewpoints, all teenagers capable of rather impressive empathy (when they choose to use it) and self-awareness. These are kids who are not only smart, they think. And they express themselves with clarity and style. " Best Children's Books

5.0 out of 5 stars From What I Remember a Review July 4, 2012
By Heather
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Okay, you have to read this one. If you read one contemporary this year, let it be this. You will laugh your a** of at the antics and outrageous things that happen. In this novel, you don't ever want to say, "It can't get any worse," because somehow it can. Of course, being teenagers, they take it a lot better than I would, but this is a great novel, especially at this time of the year.

I think the strengths of this novel were the characters. They were well written and stayed true to their characters but they grew. By far, the most uptight and in need of change was Kylie. Kylie was class valedictorian, care giver to her brother with Asperger's Syndrome, cook, chore person and anything else that needed doing while her mom worked full time evenings and her dad was a traveling salesman. She had never had a date and her one friend was Will Bixby a cross dressing gay guy who became friends with her when she could quote a line from a movie that he quoted to her in seventh grade. BFF's ever since. He has made it his mission to get her out of her jeans and t-shirt, buying her stylish clothes and always trying to get her to have a life. So when she accidentally gets trapped in Mexico with Max Langston, he thinks it's the best thing that's happened to her.

Max Langston lives for peace. He doesn't talk about feelings or anything that will get anyone upset. He will give in to Lily, his girlfriend, just to keep the peace. He never has really examined anything too closely. He keeps his world small because the less junk he knows about the less he has to deal with. His dad has cancer and is dying, only no one, not even his mother will admit that he's dying. He doesn't even really knows how he feels about Lily but he doesn't want to upset anyone, so he doesn't do anything about it.

Will Bixby is gay. That's fine, he's comfortable with that. But he wasn't cool with his parents sending him to a shrink to talk him out of it. So to throw his gayness in everyone's face, he wears dresses, girls clothing, always mixing something masculine in with it, but he does it to make a point. No, he really doesn't like girl's clothes. But he's making a statement to his parents to his school. His parents eventually came around, but no one, other than Kylie has ever come around at school. Will is by far, the funniest. Some of my favorite quotes from him:

"They've finally stopped badgering me about my clothes, but do they really need their son
wearing a black spandex mini to his high school graduation? Seems like cruel and unusual
punishment." (p.105) Talking about his parents.

"...Dad surprised me. He's a little bit to the right of Attila the Hun. ....a Republican to
the core. I think he came out of the womb in khakis and a blue blazer. His great- great
great-grandparents came over on the Mayflower. He was in an eating club at Princeton He is
so white, they've named a shade of Benjamin Moore paint after him (Bright,Uptight White #7)."
(p.107)

Lily Wentworth is blond, thin, beautiful and smart. She's rich and she and Max have been together for an entire year. But she's also a bit shallow and looks out for herself more than anyone else. She doesn't play a huge part in the book, but her scenes are pivotal, as she's Max's girlfriend. She also knows how to play Max like a fiddle. She knows just how to get what she wants actually from pretty much any guy, for that matter.

So, how did they get into Mexico? It started with an English assignment given on the day before the last day of school. Everyone else blows it off, but Kylie ever conscious of her status of valedictorian doesn't want to lose it so when she gets paired with Max she insists they do the assignment. She even promises to write his paper, too. When they are talking about the assignment her backpack with her computer gets stolen and the chase begins. She goes on foot. Max meets her with his car, they switch up when her stuff is transferred to a U-Haul with some big scary tattooed dudes. One things leads to another and they are in the back of the U-Haul without the guys knowing. That's not the funny part. That comes later. But it's a little funny. C'mon.

The funny part is that Kylie finally decide to cut loose in Ensenada, Mexico. So much goes on in one day it feels more like a week, but it's one awesome day and night! And when she decides to cut loose, she does it all the way!

Here is another favorite line but it's a spoiler if I tell you who says it:

"Please, do tell me more about the multiple girlfriends. That is so sexy." (p 280)

Now, I started this review saying the characters were the book's strengths. But, I don't think this book really has any weaknesses. It just has such great characters that they really, really shine. You have to read this book! It's got to be one of the funniest I've read ever! It's a series of mistakes that leads to a series of coincidences and it makes you think about where you are and how you got there. Was it chance, accident or design? But it's all funny and happy with some over the top characters and great friendships. I will definitely be putting this one on the keeper shelf. I already want to read it again!

Recommended for lovers of light, funny YA contemporary. Strong language, drinking, sex. Use you best judgement as to whether you're mature enough to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a GEM of a Book!!! May 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Goodreads Synopsis: KYLIE: Tijuana WHAT? I should be putting the finishing touches on my valedictorian speech. Graduation is TODAY, and is this a wedding band on my finger.

MAX: It all started with Kylie's laptop and a truck full of stolen electronics Okay, it was kind of hot, the way she broke us out like some chick in an action movie. But now we're stranded in TIjuana. WIth less than twenty-four hours before graduation. Awesome.

WILL: Saving Kylie Flores from herself is kind of a full-time occupation. Luckily, I, Will Bixby, was born for the job. And when I found out she was stuck in Mexico with dreamy Max Langston, sure, I agreed to bring thier passports across the border--but there's no reason to rush back home right away. This party is just getting started.

LILY: I just walked in on my boyfriend, Max Langston, canoodling with Kylie Flores, freak of the century. Still, I can't completely hold it against him. He NEEDS me. It's even clearer now. And I'm not giving him up without a fight.

My Thoughts: What a gem of a book!!! I absolutely loved it!

That prologue hooks you completely and makes you want to know who Kylie and Max are, where they are, and why are they married. Well it starts innocuously enough, but then the story takes you on a joyride through adventure after adventure after adventure.

During the ride we learn Kylie and Max are not who they seem. She is stronger than she appears and his strength is mostly a show he puts on because it's what others expect. They have great dialogue and are just a perfect compliment for each other.

The writing is funny, witty, serious, thoughtful, it's just everything and then some. The authors poke fun and really don't take themselves too seriously which makes the story all the more enticing.

This was a fast read, done in one sitting because I had to know the lead-up to the wedding rings, the aftermath and if Kylie was ever going to deliver her Valedictorian address. She does and while it's not the speech she wrote, her off-the-cuff remarks are something you can see an 18 year old saying, rather than an adult writing for an 18 year old. This is one of the things I so enjoyed about this book...Kylie and Max were authentic.

Kramer and Thomas are on my watch list now. Can't wait to see what they do in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Definitely worth reading! August 12, 2012
Format:Hardcover
First Impressions: I read the book synopsis for From What I Remember and I knew I had to read it! I have no idea how I missed this one when it came out in May earlier this year, but I'm glad that one of the authors made me aware of their book. Just by looking at the cover it makes me giggle. I have a super soft spot for Chihuahuas. They are the ugliest dogs ever but they are so stinking cute! I also loved the movie The Hangover (I've seen it at least a dozen times and it still makes me laugh) and this book seemed like it would be very similar to that movie. I was highly looking forward to being able to enjoy this book!

First 50 Pages: Every once in a while I like to read a book that is borderline silly with deeply flawed characters that will turn my brain into mushy-mush. From What I Remember is one of those kinds of books. You have to have a sense of humor to be able to read this book and enjoy it. People that are wound up a little too tight probably won't like this at all, but that's how it goes with comedy!

Characters & Plot: The beginning of this story started off comically and it made me want to continue reading. It gives you a glimpse of something that happens later in the story and it definitely caught my attention. I can't tell you how many times I laughed while reading this book. Too many times to count! From What I Remember has some very well-developed characters who all have some serious flaws, but each felt very realistic.

This book is told from multiple points of view from many different characters. Kylie is our main character and I could relate well to her. She is an average girl who is extraordinarily smart and happens to be her graduating class's Valedictorian. She is assigned to work on the very last school assignment with Max Langston, a typical popular and very good looking boy who could care less about finishing the final assignment. These two characters try not to work with each other as much as possible, but graduation is only two days away, so Kylie forces Max to meet with her at a Café to get it done and over with. However, nothing goes as planned.

Kylie has her computer stolen and her computer has her whole life on it, including her speech she has to make as class Valedictorian. Max puts his selfish and ass-holish ways away for a brief second and commits himself to help Kylie retrieve her laptop. They pair track down the truck her laptop is in and Kylie and Max go inside to get it back. What they weren't counting on was the truck drivers coming back and driving away with them still inside of their truck. Scared out of their minds, Kylie and Max stay quiet and they wind up in Mexico, Tijuana to be more exact! What comes next is the theft of the truck by bookish Kylie, a trip down to Ensenada where we begin to see a romance between Kylie and Max bloom. Realizing they only have a short time before graduation, Kylie makes a phone call to Will, her trusty sidekick to come and retrieve them from Mexico. But once Will arrives in Ensenada, he has other plans, like partying, and nothing is going to change his mind.

I usually don't care for stories that are told from so many different characters' points of view, but with this book, it just seemed to work. The characters were awesome, just awesome! I loved Will, who is gay and proud and he doesn't care who knows it. The romance between Kylie and Max was super sweet and well-developed. Oddly enough, their romance didn't seem to bother me much even though they had an insta-love sort of thing going on. The entire book takes place over, I think a two-day time period, so we only get to see the very beginning of their relationship. Their romance has some rocky points, mostly because of Lily. Lily is Max's girlfriend and she is your typical stuck-up super bitch. She isn't a major character, but she has a lot of impact. While most of the characters, if not all, are kind of cliché, the humor that is found in From What I Remember makes up for it. There were some one-liners in the book that were hilarious. Each chapter also begins with a quote from various movies, which I thought was pretty cool and different.

Final Thoughts: I loved this book! It was silly, so funny, and overall it was an awesome read. I'll definitely be looking out for more books by these authors! I would highly recommend From What I Remember to anyone with a functioning sense of humor. This would make a great book to end your summer with a bang!
