Editorial Reviews

Already known for his 2007 debut The Sun Is Always Brighter and 2009 s follow-up Build Me This, James returns on From The Top Of Willamette Mountain with 11 songs that hone his own singular voice and further establish him as a formidable artist. From The Top Of Willamette Mountain was produced by Richard Swift (Damien Jurado, Gardens and Villa, The Mynabirds) at his National Freedom studio in, coincidentally, Oregon s own Willamette Valley. Striving to push his own artistic boundaries and bring in a new perspective, James sought out Swift s raw, unique style of record making. Swift worked to capture the immediacy of James live performances and frequently juxtaposes the songs darker moments with a light touch. His previous albums The Sun Is Always Brighter and Build Me This both reached #1 on the iTunes Folk Album Chart, as well as earning Best of iTunes honors in the singer/songwriter category.

I love every song on this album! I bit more on the mellow side than his last offering "Build Me This", but still shows his amazing talent as a songwriter/singer/musician, and ability to creatively blend an eclectic mix of instruments into his unique folk-rock style. If you like his previous music, you will not be disappointed. If you have never heard of Joshua James before, prepare to become a fan. I will wear out this CD just like the other 3 issues I have.

Assuming you're paying with a good few handfuls of pennies. This album is a totally different approach than his last two. This is one I won't be forgetting any time soon. Unlike his first two, these songs aren't just about catchy hooks, or trendy percussion. This is quality, lasting, song writing.

If there is a better singer out there other than Joshua James, I want to meet him. He is quite possibly the best musician that is up and coming. This CD is always playing at my house.

Seems I may have found a nice little gem. Folk revival is hot right now though, and I sometimes find Joshua James' sound too familiar to Mumford & Sons, who I am so sick of! Let's see how his sound evolves... and I'll keep an eye out for a tour.

Willamette Mountain is Indie-Folk/singer-songwriter Joshua James' farmhouse in Utah, named after a purely fictional mountain whose name was inspired by the Willamette Valley of Oregon, where he recorded From The Top Of Willamette Mountain. Whether it was intentional or not, naming a mountain after a valley was entirely appropriate in a metaphorical sense considering the album's lyrics, which deal with life's ups and downs; love and loss, life and death. Produced by The Shins' Richard Swift, From The Top Of Willamette Mountain is the greatest contemporary Folk album since Ray LaMontagne's Trouble.

I have been running low on inspiring artists lately. A lot of music has been lackluster, but Joshua did an amazing job here. I listened to this album like 10 times on spotify, and decided to buy the album and support an amazing artist. Also I am a fellow Utahn, and love that there are traces of that subculture in the music.

This is a fantastic album for someone who likes singer-songwriter music with true depth and sung with emotion. Outstanding diversity provides for a solid hour of non-repetitive songs. A hidden gem from a true talent.
