3.0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad
The first problem: the cover. It is supposed to be a 2007 edition, but that seems to be a misnomer of sorts. Some of the restaurants listed under Cancun aren't even open (Glazz and Mango Tango). Additonally, there are minor errors, such as the meals offered at existing restaurants. However, the reviews of the hotels and restaurants are apt,and we enjoyed all of the one...

This was one of two guides I purchased for a recent trip to Cancun and it was by far the most helpful. There are some inaccuracies caused by the months that have passed since the author finished writing the book but that is to be expected. For example, a few restaurants have closed and at least one large hotel (Aqua) has not yet reopened from hurricane damage even though the guide says that it should be open by now.

As for their recommendations, we found their restaurant choices to be very solid (they recommended Thai Lounge and that was the highlight of our trip). On the other hand, they overrated my hotel (Westin) by at least one star as it fell far short of Westin caliber. Other attractions such as Xel-Ha, Xcaret, and the ruins of Tulum all seemed to be graded and discussed fairly.

Overall, this guide does a good job of covering the Yucatan peninsula. The standard Frommer's format is here with "Best of" lists as well as suggested itineraries. In addition to information on each specific region of the Yucatan, there is also some excellent general information helpful to planning a trip to this part of Mexico. I would recommend buying this book. If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, then also pick up either the Cancun & The Yucatan (Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides) or the Insight Compact Guide Cancun & the Yucatan. Both have pictures to help you see which sights you will most want to visit and which ones you don't mind skipping.

Additonally, there are minor errors, such as the meals offered at existing restaurants. However, the reviews of the hotels and restaurants are apt,and we enjoyed all of the one that were recommended (especially Lorenzillo's).I think that the author/s could have done a better job listing activities as well, such as dinner cruises.Lastly, since the book is a guide, it should explain how to navigate economically in a general sense.Because Mexico is third world country, some people will do what they can to rip you off, or blatantly steal (the exchange desk at our hotel tried to keep $150 extra dollars, and the parking attendent at Chichen Itza told us it was $10 to park, even though it was 10 pesos{which is $.65 USA)-those are just two examples). Overall, it was very useful, and I do recommend it, but I also recommend looking into other options.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Guide, September 18, 2007

This review is from: Frommer's Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan 2008 (Frommer's Complete Guides) (Paperback)
This was one of two guides I purchased for a trip to Cancun and it was by far the most helpful. There was good coverage of hotels, restaurants, night clubs, beaches and watersports, and shopping. The guide also offers good general information on traveling to Mexico in general and Cancun particularly. I should add that the entire Yucatan peninsula has similar coverage in this guide, not just Cancun.

As for their recommendations, we found their restaurant choices to be very solid (they recommended Thai Lounge and that was the highlight of our trip). On the other hand, they overrated my hotel (Westin) by one star as it fell far short of Westin caliber. 2.0 out of 5 stars Too Old, April 17, 2007

If you are looking for info on hotels and restaraunts - keep looking. This was the least useful of the three books I bought. It is way too out of date. It is useful for things that dont change like day trips and general travel info, but much of that was too generic.

I have used Frommer's guides in the past and found them reliable. I knew nothing about what to expect in Cancun. The guide had useful general advice about travel in Mexico and currency issues, and it was very informative about cultural attractions. It was a bit light on the coverage of hotels.

This guide was pretty good. I got it for the Cozumel information. Over half of the guide was for other areas of the Yukatan. The title clearly indicates that, but it would have been nice to see a Cozumel specific guide from Frommers that includes more of the resort/hotels in cozumel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Travel Book, May 11, 2007

If you know any of Frommer's work, you know what to expect from this book as well. These travel guides are always thorough and as up-to-date as possible with a published book. Don't hesitate to pick this one if you are planning to travel to these areas of Mexico.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Choice, January 14, 2008
This review is from: Frommer's Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan 2008 (Frommer's Complete Guides) (Paperback)
I'm headed to Cancun soon and was looking for a comprehensive guide to Cancun. While the title of this guide starts with Cancun, the guide covers all of the Yucatan.... the section on Cancun is only 15 or so pages. I was disappointed with the limited infomation on Cancun... a handful of restaurant recommendations.... brief, not very informative descriptions of the outdoor activities... it's more of a general overview instead of the in depth guide I wanted...
