Helpful Planning Tool,
By Joseph Boone (Irvine, CA United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (2008 HOLIDAY TEAM) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Frommer's Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan 2009 (Frommer's Complete Guides) (Paperback)
After checking out multiple guides to Cancun and the surrounding area, this was by far the most helpful. There was good coverage of hotels, restaurants, night clubs, beaches &water sports, and shopping. The guide also offers good general information on traveling to Mexico in general and Cancun particularly. I should add that the entire Yucatan peninsula has similar coverage in this guide, not just Cancun.
As for their specific recommendations, we found their restaurant choices to be very solid and enjoyed all the highly rated places that we managed to visit. Our hotel was perhaps overrated by one star, but was certainly within the bounds of a reasonable rating. Other attractions such as Xel-Ha, Xcaret, and the ruins of Tulum all seemed to be graded and discussed fairly. Overall, this guide does a fine job of covering the Yucatan peninsula. The standard Frommer's format is here with "Best of" lists as well as suggested itineraries. In addition to information on each specific region of the Yucatan, there is also some excellent general information helpful to planning a trip to this part of Mexico. I would recommend buying this book. If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, then also pick up either the Top 10 Cancun and Yucatan (EYEWITNESS TOP 10 TRAVEL GUIDE) or the Insight Compact Guide Cancun & the Yucatan (Cancun and the Yucatan, 1st ed). Both have pictures to help you see which sights you will most want to visit and which ones you don't mind skipping.

Typical of all Frommer's guides, but hardly an update. I wonder when was the last time the reviewers actually visited Cancun as opposed to the more remote areas they clearly prefer. In fact, there is not mention of a single hotel or restaurant north of downtown Cancun. Playa Mujeres and the top resorts there are not even mentioned. If you are exploring the remote areas of the Yucatan this is a great resource. If you are not, try one of the other guides. I would return this one if I hadn't already ripped out the map.

Not much on Cozumel,

This book is wonderful if you are looking to go to the Yucatan or Cancun. But don't buy it if you want to go to Cozumel. There are probably 400 pages in the book, and a whopping 6 pages only are on Cozumel, which is what I bought the book for. Wonderful book and the authors are great, and the pull out map will come in handy!

Guide is typical Frommers Guide with a good amount of detail. Focus is mostly on hotels and select restaurants but overall works well to support vacation planning

This book is a good 200 pages shorter than the comparative books for the region. While it did a decent job and covers a lot, it isn't the best. Frustratingly, the index is very abbreviated; some of the regions and areas have attractions IN the area, but not in the index. We also used the Moon Guide Yucatan and the Lonely Planet Yucatan. We preferred the Moon Guide, but also used this book for cross reference. His personal references and experiences are the best aspects of the book, and it is still a valuable tool for exploring the region. The included map, while not amazing, was better than the maps the other books provided (none).

Not the greatest travel book.,

Although this book contained quite a bit of information, there were several inaccuracies and virtually no pictures. I know that we were going to Mexico; but it would have been nice to have a few pictures in each chapter to show us what to expect. We made a date from a perfunctory map of Playa del Carmen to meet my cousin who was also in Mexico. We decided to meet in front of one of the restaurants predominantly displayed on the map. When we got to Playa, we couldn't find it and no one from Playa had heard of the restaurant, either - and we had purchased the 2009 copy. I will not buy other books from Frommer's. Friends had books about the Yucatan that were great, those are the ones that I will look for from now on.

Disorganized, Few Places to Stay,

This review is from: Frommer's Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan 2009 (Frommer's Complete Guides) (Paperback)
I usually prefer Frommer's guides (at least 80% of the time), but not this one. I ended up getting the Fodor's instead. This one was too disorganized and was very light on places to stay. It just seemed like it was thrown together as an afterthought.
