Very good tips for my first trip to San Diego, has a lot of specific information about what you can do, even for a short period or a more time frame. The recomendations are from a person that lived in San Diego, so I think that gives a more realistici opinion. It includes a map that is easy to use and very helpfull.

My friend and I decided to take a trip together, and had never been to San Diego at all before. This book greatly helped with all of our plans, including lodging and food. Our bed and breakfast was an excellent place at a great price and the book helped immensely with our event choices. It recommended great places and without it, our trip definitely would not have been the same. I used the book with every aspect of our trip. I highly recommend it a lot for those not familiar with the area!

I've used the Frommer guides for years and I bought this guide before taking a trip to the Gas Lamp Quarter last month. The Frommer's guide was helpful in its recommendations of hotels, restaurants, shopping and best bets when traveling for 1 to 5 days. It categorized the hotels and restaurants as inexpensive, moderate, and expensive. I liked the maps which gave an overview of each region in San Diego. I found the detachable San Diego map to be very helpful in giving me an overview of greater San Diego and downtown. One of the most helpful sections is section 1 (The Best of San Diego) which tells you the most unforgettable travel experiences, best splurge hotels and moderately priced hotels, best dining experiences, and best things to do for free. It also provides helpful tips for tourists and provides the toll-free numbers to airlines and car rental agencies.
The guide also offers a more in depth look at San Diego in terms of providing a brief history, tips on where to eat & drink, and the pop culture/ entertainment scene. Another thing I liked was the section on Side Trips from San Diego which offers suggestions to go to North County, Anaheim (Disneyland / Knotts Berry Farm), to the Desert state park or to Tijuana. For those who enjoy walking, the guide tells you walking tours in places like Balboa Park, Embarcadero and Gaslamp Quarter. The guide left out some really good restaurants in the Gas Lamp Quarter, where I stayed, and I wondered why it didn't have that particular restaurant in its recommendations, but others right near it. Also, the guide can use more colored photos to make it more appealing (compare with DK guides). After a while, the red and black ink on newspaper type paper got to me. However, the Frommer's guide was a reliable and helpful guide.

Warning - When I arrived at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Downtown it was closed. The book fails to mention that the museum closes for a month at a time periodically for new exhibits installation. Call before going

I ordered this book for a family member that does not reside in my state. She received it promptly and enjoyed the good condition that she received it in.
