We bought this in preparation of our Honeymoon to SF and it was the most helpful thing. It took us to so many local gems and helped us navigate the city; it really made it the most wonderful trip.
There are sections about the neighborhoods, the restaurants, the lodging, the shopping, anything you would need. We felt like we knew the city before we got there so we could hit the ground running and see so much more than we would have without it. Plus once we got there it took us through walking tours of sections of the city and directed us to some local "non-tourist" restaurants that had the "most Amazing" food, which we were able to experience without being looked at as outsiders.
It helped us get a real feel for the city rather than just the generic tourist traps.
Highly recomended.

The best guide of the city by the bay in print. The finds are always worthwhile.
The wine country section is a great bonus!

I discovered one of the best places for breakfast in America (Dottie's True Blue Cafe). I would have never gone there without a previous Frommer's favorite earmark.

I update my edition every couple of years. It like all Frommer's guides is a great resource.

a vast majority of this book has been dedicated to telling you where the hotels and restaurants are... I did a better job than the author did with five minutes on google. After taking a trip to New York City in 2007 and having every question faithfully answered by my trusty Frommer's guide, I had reasonably high expectations for this book.

The layout is terrible. 1/3 of the book gives you watered down, vague descriptions of hotels and restaurants.
It takes ten minutes to find anything that you're looking for. Every time I peer at the edge of the page to figure out what chapter/neighborhood I'm looking through, I realize I'm in the wrong chapter entirely. Instead of having five tiny poorly laid out descriptions of fisherman's wharf, wouldn't it make more sense to have a whole section on fisherman's wharf and avoid having to flip through the book endlessly? It's like that for every neighborhood.

What I wanted when I bought the book was a several page break-down on each borough of the city. It would have taken far less time and paper to print and it would have left the reader with a much better Idea of what the city is like and what appeals to them.

After flipping through the book for a half hour and consulting google for better/more detailed info, I have given up entirely on the Book and stuck to my search engine.

The Frommer's San Francisco 2011 has enabled us to compile our 'must see' list in order of priority. Further internet searching based on Frommers suggestions has been rewarding and cost saving for us when we visit San Francisco in a couple of months.
