5.0 out of 5 stars Best Scotland Driving Guide, October 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Frommer's 25 Great Drives in Scotland (Best Loved Driving Tours) (Paperback)
I bought this and two other Scotland only (not UK) tour books for our two week motorcycle visit this Spring. One of them was Rick Steve's book. Both of the other two were utterly forgettable, hitting only the high profile destinations. Using this guide, we broke away from the hordes of tourists at Loch Ness, Edinburgh, and such and saw archeological sites like burial cairns and ancient forts for free with nobody around but ourselves and the sheep. We also ended up spending more time talking to locals and getting away from the high dollar castle tours toward the little castle ruins that you could explore freely. The way this book is structured, you can find great things to see wherever you happen to be (although we didn't follow the prescribed tours and stop at every place). Lots of color pictures (in stark contrast to Steves' dry tome) made it easy to see what we wanted to see and what we didn't. We didn't really use any of the books for B&B selection as most of them aren't listed and if they are, they are outdated. Practical information in this book is lacking, but not really necessary. You can get that from the web before you leave home. If you are going by car, motorcycle, or even bicycle, this little book is the only one you need.

We had a couple of Scotland guidebooks - this one was really the best to suit our needs. We did a lot of driving and this book mapped things out nicely by region. It's got enough information to read as you go on your journey . . . but not so much that it's overwhelming.

I checked all of the guides for Scotland out of the library and reviewed them for a self driving tour of two weeks duration. This was the best of them along with Fodor's "See It Scotland
