Best Scotland Driving Guide,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Frommer's 25 Great Drives in Scotland (Best Loved Driving Tours) (Paperback)
I bought this and two other Scotland only (not UK) tour books for our two week motorcycle visit this Spring. One of them was Rick Steve's book. Both of the other two were utterly forgettable, hitting only the high profile destinations. Using this guide, we broke away from the hordes of tourists at Loch Ness, Edinburgh, and such and saw archeological sites like burial cairns and ancient forts for free with nobody around but ourselves and the sheep. We also ended up spending more time talking to locals and getting away from the high dollar castle tours toward the little castle ruins that you could explore freely. The way this book is structured, you can find great things to see wherever you happen to be (although we didn't follow the prescribed tours and stop at every place). Lots of color pictures (in stark contrast to Steves' dry tome) made it easy to see what we wanted to see and what we didn't. We didn't really use any of the books for B&B selection as most of them aren't listed and if they are, they are outdated. Practical information in this book is lacking, but not really necessary. You can get that from the web before you leave home. If you are going by car, motorcycle, or even bicycle, this little book is the only one you need.

We had a couple of Scotland guidebooks - this one was really the best to suit our needs. We did a lot of driving and this book mapped things out nicely by region. It's got enough information to read as you go on your journey . . . but not so much that it's overwhelming.

I checked all of the guides for Scotland out of the library and reviewed them for a self driving tour of two weeks duration. This was the best of them along with Fodor's "See It Scotland

This book is a keeper. It makes me want to rent a car next time I am in Scotland. Lots of great information, especially about out-of-the-way places.

I could have any other guidebook and found the same info.,
This review is from: Frommer's 25 Great Drives in Scotland (Best Loved Driving Tours) (Paperback)
It's a great guidebook, but I could have had same info from any other guidebook as well. I was looking for really a great drive guide, but found this to be sort of a regular guide. However, there are some information on driving in Scotland but it's nothing that I can't find out online. We've been to Scotland once drive all the way throughout the U.K. and Scotland without these guides, but had a wonderful time. I guess I expected too much out of this as this title goes, great drives in Scotland. I didn't find any information regarding any hidden gems like the area in the Highlands close to Loch Ness, where there are so many areas without tourists all over. Bit disappointed.

Since we'll be driving in Scotland, I thought this book would be great. However, it's more along the lines of out-of-the-way places rather than the specific areas we're traveling throughout the country. Pictures are pretty but that's about it.

Ok, I'm totally stoked about going to Scotland. If it is half as good as this book then it will be a total hoot! Great deal!
