You'd Be Better Off With Another Book,
By
This review is from: Frommer's Maui 2006 (Frommer's Complete Guides) (Paperback)
This book was okay at best. First of all the pull out map is the worst I've seen. My husband and I decided to use it on our first day there - a highway pictured on the map showed a somewhat straight line going around one side of Maui. This road ended up being a one lane dirt road along the side of a sharp cliff with the most hairpin turn I've ever seen. Come to find out, most other Maui maps have a warning by this road for first time visitors telling them to be very cautious.
The layout of this book is horrible as well. Things were hard to find and I felt like I was in the index more than the actual book. We stayed near Pa'ia, and found that our Frommer's Maui mentioned several restaurants, but left out the amazing shops and the greatest grocery store on the island! You'd be much better off buying Hidden Maui or Maui Revealed. When I finally ditched Frommers book and picked up one of the above mentioned, we were led to the most beautiful beach walk we've ever taken. These other books also not only tell you recommended places, but where not to go - which we wished we had know before hand. (FYI - don't visit the Enchanting Floral Gardens.) Frommer's assumes that Maui is a well signed resort island - it's not. You need a book with more direction on how to actually find the beautiful spots on the island. I wouldn't recommend this book.

Traveling to Hawaii? Get another book.,
By BaerGrl "Kat Baer" (Troy, ID) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Frommer's Maui 2006 (Frommer's Complete Guides) (Paperback)
Generically written at best, Frommer's continues to fall short of its competitors in regards to Hawaii. This is the last time I'll purchase a Frommer's guide to any of the islands in Hawaii. The content is descriptive and thorough but the lack of illustrations and photographs makes the book rather dull and boring. Other books excell when Frommer's does not; as another reviewer hints at, don't waste your time with Frommer's unless you want a novel.

Maui Revealed was far better at pointing us in the right directions for "off the beaten path" activities and sights during our trip. Frommers Maui does have some helpful maps... but that was the extent of it's use for us.

Great read, but too much text,
By Rocket22 "David Coughlan" (Florida) - See all my reviews

This is an excellent guidebook, IF you like to read a book while on vacation. I don't claim to speak for everyone but the last thing I want on my vacation is to have to read loads of text. The book is very well written, one of the best I've owned, but just getting through the long lines of continuous text gets old. The book really needs more photographs and illustrations, and the use of another color besides red would have been nice too. Plus the text is awful small, hard for quick reference.
When it comes down to it, if you want to learn a lot about Maui and get all the details, this is the book for you (or Rough Guide Mini for Maui). If you want a tour guidebook for sightseeing, etc without missing any details then I'd recommend Maui Revealed or Maui Mile by Mile. They aren't as wordy, but they are better for travelers on the go. Aloha, Dave

Dissapointed,

I should have followed other reviewers advice. I expected more from this brand name of book. If I had only read this book I'd have never wanted to explore many of these places. Luckily I also had a copy of Revealed and Maui Mile by Mile.

Great Great book! Frommers are the best travel books, hands down. If your going to Maui, you need this. This book lead us to lots of awesome things that we normally would not have found on our own.

Book was great. We brought it with us on the trip & it described perfectly the restaurants & attractions. I'll buy one for my next tropical trip!

for price savings, i should have gone to the book store. i didn't save that much and i waited a while (which in my limited experience w/amazon orders is unusual) for the book to be delivered. the book, like most from frommers, receives the 5 stars.
