Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

At nearly 2,000 miles east to west and more than 1,000 miles north to south, Mexico is a large and diverse country. It requires a similarly expansive and thorough guidebook to do it justice, and Frommer's has the experience, the organizational expertise, and the practical details to pull it off. One of Frommer's smartest features is its "Best Of" chapter with 14 "best" lists, such as Best Beach Vacations, Best Archaeological Sites, Best Shopping, Best Inexpensive Inns, and Best Mexican Food & Drink. It is the first chapter here, and it provides useful suggestions you'll return to as you learn more about your options and start wanting to make decisions and narrow the focus of your trip.

The "Planning" chapter includes all that it should--with brief descriptions of each region, entry requirements, health and safety information, ways to get there, and a calendar of events. Then come specific chapters on specific regions. The "Mexico City" chapter is quite comprehensive, and the Mexico City metro map on the inside cover is a real bonus. The rest of the coverage, from Tepoztlán to Baja, is similarly meticulous, with more of a leaning toward middle- and high-income tourists than toward the budget traveler. In addition, there are 67 city and regional maps; a large fold-out map of Mexico; appendixes of Mexico's history, cuisine, and useful vocabulary; and an online directory to further aid your research. Mexico 2000 does what Frommer's is best at: it provides a vast wealth of information, and then it helps you navigate without drowning. --Stephanie Gold

5.0 out of 5 stars The one book for Mexico., November 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Frommer's Mexico 2000 (Paperback)
I've been travelling in Mexico upwards of 30 years, have seen all of the guide books, and in my opinion, Frommer's is the best. You really don't need another guide book for Mexico. Here's why:

Terrific walking guides. Excellent choice of restaurants in all price ranges. Ditto, hotels. Very good historical information. Although there is so much to see in Mexico, if you just follow the recommendations in this guide, you'll experience the best that Mexico has to offer.

And, I would recommend picking up the Mexico City book as well if you're planning to spend a lot of time in the capital.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better each year, November 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Frommer's Mexico 2000 (Paperback)
Frommer's Mexico improves with each passing year. The descriptions are ever-more complete and the writing sharp. One of the authors even has a sense of humor. If you take one book on your trip to Mexico, this should be it.

4.0 out of 5 stars One book for the traveller who likes comfort, November 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Frommer's Mexico 2000 (Paperback)
I write this on my return from my first trip to Mexico. What I liked most about this book is that each suggestion was exactly as it was described - eg if a hotel was luxurious, it was; if an attraction was not rated with a "must see" star, it wasn't a "Must-see". The other book brought was a Lonely Planet guide - also very helpful, but generally for a slightly more roughing-it traveller. The safety tips were also spot on, and the photos make you want to visit many more places than you have originally planned for! I think if you are a midscale traveler, this is the right book for you.
