I'm disappointed; Competent--yes; Completely re-written--no,
By A Customer
This review is from: Frommer's 99 Mexico (Serial) (Paperback)
I am disappointed. Each year I look forward to reading Frommer's Guide to Mexico to see what is new and interesting in Mexico travel (although I prefer Frommer's Budget Guide to Mexico--which has not been published since 1987). The 1999 edition (like the 1998 edition before it) does not seem to offer much of anything new. There is still much solid travel information but little seems to have changed since 1987. It is my experience that there are more hotels and restaurants in Mexico than ever before and that new areas are opening to tourism, but I do not see this reflected on the pages of Frommer's, which actually seems to be limiting its listings.

I LOVE this book!,

As a frequent traveler to Mexico, I've come to appreciate Frommer's guides, and this one is no exception. From a visual and tactile perspective, I love the map and the interior layout of the guide. But more important is the content, which is superbly written. I also appreciate Frommer's more selective approach to hotel and restaurant listings. I prefer these in-depth reviews over a laundry list with minimal descriptions, such as is to be found in the competition. This book is bound to be dog-eared in no time!

Current, witty, much improved.,

Most travel guides are not even useful, much less readable, but the updated Frommer's Guide to Mexico is a great leap forward. New hotels, restaurants and destinations, plus a genuine familiarity with Mexicans and their culture. Punctuated by good cheer, quirky details and even an occasional belly laugh---and free of puffery. The ratings are strict but fair, and extremely current. Sections on the Yucatan and the colonial silver towns are especially helpful and easy to read. Full of useful tips on how to get around a country where travel is often complicated.
