About the Author

Barbara Ramsay Orr has been writing about world travel, food, wine, and culture for over 20 years and is still awed by the beauty of her home turf. Her work has appeared in most of the major publications in Canada, in international publications, and online. She maintains a trio of blogs that document her encounters with food, with the world, and with the local scene in Niagara and has won awards for both her writing and her travel photography. While she appreciates the pleasures of a good hike or an energetic bike ride, they are still, basically, just good ways to work up an appetite.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Guide March 26, 2010

If you are looking for a guide with a lot of photos, this is not for you. But if you want a guide that gives great tips on places to stay, eat, and see...this is that guide. Included is a lot of history of the area, especially the wine region, which I found interesting. There are nice maps of Niagara Falls, Ontario and the surrounding towns. There are suggested iteneraries for one, two, or three days trips. I found a lot of good money saving tips such as where to buy multi-attraction passes, and the fact that there are a lot of taxes added to restaurant bills (thats good information when you are expecting one price and its 25% higher due to the taxes!). I also appreciated that there were tips about attractions that were "overrated" so that I wont spend time or money on those places. We are going to visit this area in June and this is the book I intend to take, it has helped us make decisions on what to see and do during our time there.

I thank myself for all the searching I did to find a book like this on amazon.com. This is probably the bestselling book devoted to Niagara Falls which is from a well-known travel guide series.

272 pages is without contradiction enough to satisfy me. Even though this book mostly covers the Canada side, that's where most of the tourists go to, not just because of the Horseshoe Falls, but also because of better hotels and more attractions.

As with all regularly updated Frommer's travel guides, it covers all the information necessary, both integral and interesting. These sections include:

Restaurants with their average meal price;

Information on the excessively high Niagara Falls (Canada side) restaurant tax, which many tourists don't realize until they feel the pinch on their wallets when they notice taxes usually add at least 15-20% to the subtotal, what to expect in a prime tourist area;

Tips on money-saving attraction passes, including the widely advertised Adventure Pass;

Maps which are easy to comprehend and are very useful;

History about the region, including the wine region; and

As with all modern-day Frommer's Travel guides, they give you the best of what to do in the region for those who have short trips. I find the one-, two-, and three-day itinerary suggestions very useful, especially because it's a common feature in Frommer's.

Of course all books have disadvantages. This book may not feature an abundant amount of photos, but I do not consider that a significant drawback.

Frommer's main competitor, Fodor's has a guide covering Niagara Falls, but unlike Frommer's, Fodor's does not offer a guide covering solely Niagara Falls.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for single/business travelers June 12, 2013
By Emily S
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm heading to a conference in Niagara Falls, NY later this month and bought this book to help me figure out how to spend my limited down time. This book is incredibly family/romance-centric. "You will want a picture of you and your family with the Falls behind you!" "I promise you'll have the most romantic cocktail of your life at this location." I appreciate books that point out family friendly attractions, but the tone is overkill here.

That could be a minor annoyance if the information contained in the book was more helpful. I've found it difficult to locate some key information (e.g. how to cross the border by foot). I keep ending up consulting wikitravel or google in lieu of this book.

This book was somewhat helpful as we are getting ready to visit Niagara Falls soon. We haven't totally relied on it's words of wisdom.
