About the Author

About the Authors Jennifer Eveland (Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore) was a child when she and her family first moved to Singapore, and after returning to the United States, she was drawn again and again to the magic of Singapore, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. She is the author of Frommer's Singapore & Malaysia and Frommer's Thailand, 4th Edition (available February 2000), and currently lives in Bangkok, Thailand. Michelle Fama (The Philippines) lived and traveled throughout East Africa, Egypt, and South America before coming aboard as the author of the Philippines chapter in this guide. She has been a producer at abcnews.com in New York and is currently a writer/producer for gorp.com, one of the leading outdoor recreation/adventure travel sites on the Web. Mary Herczog (Bali and Lombok) lives in Los Angeles and works in the film industry when she isn't traveling and writing for Frommer's. Her other books include Frommer's Las Vegas, Frommer's New Orleans, and contributions to Frommer's Los Angeles. She hopes this list will soon include more exotic foreign destinations, though Bali—where she spent lots of time in the temples and so felt only marginally guilty when she did goof off on a beach—was a pretty good start. Stacy Lu (Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia) loves writing as a career, in part because it justifies her travel addiction: In 1998 she visited eleven countries, using the Netherlands and China as home bases. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Forbes Digital, and Travel Holiday. She lives, for now, in Tarrytown, New York, and is a producer at abcnews.com. Beth Reiber (Hong Kong) worked for several years in Germany as a freelance travel writer for major U.S. newspapers and in Tokyo as the editor of Far East Traveler. Now a freelancer again and residing in Lawrence, Kansas, with her husband and two young children, she is the author of Frommer's Hong Kong, Frommer's Japan, and Frommer's Tokyo, and is a contributor to Frommer's Europe from $50 a Day. Jonathan Siskin (intro and planning chapters) is a peripatetic writer/broadcaster whose travels have taken him to more than 100 countries on all seven continents. His articles on leisure and business travel have appeared in newspapers and magazines from coast to coast and his radio reports have been heard worldwide over the Armed Forces Radio Network. While spending a year living in Australia, he took his first trip to Southeast Asia and continues to return to this incomparable part of the world as often as he can.

- Bali, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos.. Get the highlights of frommers books in one edition. As all Frommers, great recommendations on itineraries (Best of lists) and opinionated. Not for backpackers who want to know more details (lonely planet is best for that) but great for those who want a range of options and strong guidance.

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding, March 21, 2001

This review is from: Frommer's Southeast Asia (Frommer's Complete Guides) (Paperback)
This guide is one of the best guide books. It has everything you need to know before going to Asia. From currency, weather, attractions, shopping, beaches, bargain accomodations to the best local dining experience. I liked the various highlights that were given for each city in asia. This way if you are pressed for time while traveling, you can pick out the sites that were listed. Very helpful with the information provided for getting arounfd the city. It lists various modes of transportation, and the approximate costs. A must have if you are traveling to asia.

3.0 out of 5 stars just OK, May 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this book in May 2011 to do reserach on my upcoming trip to southeast Asia. Frommer's Southest Asia has a good general descriptions of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bali/Indonesia (Philippines is not included) in 654 pages. Each country has a very good description of things a traveler should know(eg best time to travel, when important holidays are, historical information and facts, information on the political situation, safety precautions, tips on getting visas to some of the countries, sites to visit, getting around, shopping suggestions, overview of foods and poular dishes, restaurants, etc). Much of this information was very helpful and will help a travel plan a itinerary. One gripe I have is that there are no photos. The book includes some small maps of the main city a visitor is likely to travel to. I would have been nice to have an idea of recommended places or sites, especially in a travel book. The other gripe I have are the suggestions for hotels that were mentioned. The book assumes that the reader is willing to pay top dollar for a 5 star resort hotel in SOUTHEAST ASIA. The hotels that were highlighted were few and were very expensive establishments; the prices listed were costly (hundreds of dollars per night). This was a big disappointment since there are many very inexpensive, but good quality sleeping establishments all over southeast asia! The book should give the reader more hotel options, especially hotels with websites so the reader cna get a preview.
