A nice little guide,
By nehiker (Boston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Frommer's Stockholm Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
This is a nice guide that fits easily in a reasonably sized pocket. It comes with a separate map of central Stockholm, which is way better than any of the tourist maps we were handed out there. There are also many more smaller, color, maps in the book itself, indicating locations of attractions, restaurants, etc. in various areas of city. The location of at least one of the restaurants on one of the little maps was slightly inaccurate (shifted by a couples of tiny blocks), but the address was correct. The book includes suggestions for self-guided tours of the city, depending on the length of the stay, as well as separate lists of museums, restaurants, and shopping venues. We found all of the information that we checked accurate, except it turned out that the Observatory Museum offers tours in English for groups with appointment only; the view of the city from that hill is not great either. One drawback is that the guide includes no information on grocery stores or pharmacies. The hotel section of the guide is essentially useless: hotel rates and reviews can be easily found online.

I purchased this for a first time trip to Stockholm. It proved to be my go everywhere book. It is small and therefore easy to keep on you. The city map is OK, but I ended up using a free map from one of the tourist information spots. The biggest benefit in this is its wealth of information using relatively brief descriptions. My son and I visited a fantastic Stockholm outdoor museum called Skanson. We would have missed visiting this gem if not for the outstanding description of it in the childrens/family section listed in the book.

Great book for short stay in Stockholm,

I was in Stockholm for about 2 days in Winter and the winter section of this book helped a lot in terms of letting me know what things were open. Skansen is a great little park to visit during winter as it depicts older Swedish lifestyles. It hit on all the main attractions of the city that is worth seeing. The walking tour of the old city was good. The map included is useless, just grab the map from the tourist information center or at your hotel. A good map is key for a touring a city you never been to, otherwise you'll be lost. I wish they had a better souvenir buying section.

The best Stockholm Guidebook,

This review is from: Frommer's Stockholm Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
My wife and I purchased a few Stockholm guidebooks before our recent three day visit. "Frommer's Stockholm Day by Day" was the best book by far.
PROS: 1. Compact size is easy to carry. 2. Starts with a list of "12 Favorite Moments", which is useful if you're only going to be in Stockholm for a few days. 3. Information is arranged logically into ten chapters covering the best full-day tours, special-interest tours, neighborhood walks, shopping, outdoors, dining, nightlife, arts and entertainment, lodging and day trips. 4. Each chapter contains extensive listings with star ratings. Detailed maps are included to pinpoint the location of all the places that are mentioned. 5. The Metro Map which folds out from the front cover is better than the "official" Metro Map because it shows the metro lines in relation to the map of Stockholm. The "official" map shows straight lines emanating from the Central Station and is useless if you're not familiar with Stockholm's streets and neighborhoods. CONS: 1. The attached foldout map is not as good as the free map that you can get from your hotel or from the tourist information center near Stockholm's Central Station. Or better still, buy the Stockholm Map Guide so you don't have to squint to read the long street names.

Must have for tourists,

I've bought 3 guide books on Stockholm and 1 on Sweden for my honeymoon and this is definitely the best of all. Simple, clear, concise. Small and easy to carry around with you in a purse. Fold out map is pretty good, but a little too simple since its missing alot of smaller streets. Very good tips on museums/hotels/restaurants/tours. Does not go into any Swedish history or have much background information, so if that's what you want, check out EyeWitness or Frommers.
