About the Author

Freelance travel writer and photographer Teresa Fisher has been a regular visitor to Vienna for over 25 years, lured by the art and architecture, the coffee houses and especially the city’s rich musical heritage. Although this is her first book for Frommer’s, she has authored more than twenty guidebooks for a variety of publishers (including Thomas Cook, Lonely Planet and the AA). A fluent German speaker, a music graduate and a specialist in European city breaks, Teresa was the obvious choice to write Vienna Day by Day.

The information in this guide was generally helpful, but poorly laid out. I thought the "day by day" format would be useful, but instead it ended up being confusing.

The book (as advertised) sets out several "days" of suggested itineraries. Instead of listing all of the attractions/restaurants/etc by neighborhood, it sets out "suggested day one" and lists all the attractions, then "day two" and lists all the attractions, etc. (It also has suggested itineraries based on particular interests.) The descriptions of the attractions were listed with that day's itinerary. Some of the restaurants were listed as a suggested stopping point along one of the walks. The rest were listed in a restaurant section, although unfortunately the list was not divided out by neighborhood.

The trouble is, the different itineraries overlapped geographically. So rather than seeing what there was to see in one part of town, then moving to the other, you'd be hop-scotching all over the place - at least with some of the itineraries. The guide was not always helpful about how to get from one spot to the next, and the included maps were often unclear.

Because the itineraries did not necessarily mesh with our own preferences, we ended up not always following the suggested "days" exactly. That's when the book gets particularly confusing. Because the attractions are listed by itinerary, not by neighborhood, it was difficult to figure out which attractions / restaurants etc. were nearby. Several times we got back to the hotel and realized that something we wanted to see had been just down the street from a museum or church we had visited earlier in the day.

A better format would be to set out the attractions by neighborhood, with a separate "suggested itineraries" section.

I'm a huge fan of Frommer's Day by Day guides and this one lives up to the standard. They are nice, compact and provide enough things to do for a short visit to the city.

Good book to organize your trip day by day. I use with it Rick Steve's Vienna, Salzberg and Tirol guide

Poor guide with uncomplete information.
The "map inside" just shows downtown and have just few street names.
