4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Your Trip Planning, August 6, 2005

My spouse and I just returned from a week in Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. This book was our primary reference for planning our trip and making additional decisions about what to do when there. We found it very useful for both aspects. Some of our personal favorites among those suggested by the the author were: Mount Washburn day hike (Ystone), forest fire exhibit at Visitor's Center at Grant Village (Ystone), staying at Old Faithful Inn overlooking geyser basin (Ystone), staying at Lake Yellowstone Hotel (Ystone), Inspiration Point day hike (GTetons), and using High Country Flies (Jackson) for a day long fly fishing trip. You may need additonal maps from other sources as this is probably the one area of the book that could be improved. However, if you are looking for a condensed reference book written by someone who knows what they are talking about, invest in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, August 19, 2005

Family Planner (North Dakota, USA) - See all my reviews
We were planning our first trip to Yellowstone and were new to Frommer's guide books, but we thought we'd give it a whirl. I'm glad we did, as it gave us great insight to places in Yellowstone we never knew existing! I would highly recommend Frommer's guide books to any destination, as it not only provides you with off the beaten places to go, but also suggests areas to avoid if you are short on time. From now on, we plan all our vacations with Frommer's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and very useful book, November 21, 2005
My family spent 2 weeks in Yellowstone, Grand Teton's and Jackson Hole, Wy in June 2005. We purchased this book months prior to our visit, highlighted the "MUST DO'S" and scratched off things we were not interested in--long hikes. This wonderul book helped us plan our trip so that we got the most for our time and money. I would like to see more resturant info but it was a very nice tool to have. If you get to Gardner, Montana this book recommends a 'hole-in-the-wall' resturant called Hateful Helen's. The book says 'not much to look at but wonderful food' and we agree! Best hamburgers you've ever eaten. We had a wonderful vacation. Thanks Frommers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Right to the detail, February 19, 2003
This review is from: Frommer's Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks (Paperback)
Can you imagine writing 243 pages on just 2 National Parks? That's why I say it's right to the detail!

Like all Frommer's books, the author starts with his recommendations - best vacations, best hotels, best eateries, best sights etc etc - with regards to the region in question (in this case YST & GRT). And it's really not about pure reporting the facts, but personal opinions that encourage rather than dictate your own opinion-forming process.

Other useful information includes month-by-month temperature information, road closures, where to get money, ATM machines etc, and, my favorite of all, When-to-go guide. There's even a section that talks about towns and cities bordering Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks, though they are not part of the region proper!

As we go deeper, the book will further the divide the regions into smaller sub-regions, such as Old Faithful Area, Norris Jct Area and Jackson Hole. You want to know which town really suits you and will make your vacation a memorable one. There's even a map showing which town is nearest to which attractions. For example if you love the Old Faithful, you won't want to fly into Jackson Hole; or if you wanna river raft in the Snake River, Cody is not the right place to reside during your stay!

By the look of how much I know as mentioned above, you know how good the book is! ;O)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great material in a compact size, March 7, 2006
This book has been a great help in planning a family vacation to the National Parks. And the compact size (about 4 inches by 8 inches) means the book will be small enough to fit in a fanny pack for easy reference during the trip. Kudos, Frommer's.
