5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Live Set
For all I know, I'm one of those guys the title refers to. As live music goes, these guys are outstanding. They played in Tulsa a few years back and performed some of the songs on this cd. They are, in a word, FUNNY. The lyrics are smart, with a mean streak, and they play the music as good as or better than the artists they're parodying. Their original material is...

I was really disappointed in this CD. I've never heard Pinkard & Bowden live before, and I hope I never have to again! Their studio-produced songs are so witty I quess I expected the same of their live comedy. The only tracks worth listening to are the songs, only a few of which were not poor (...) attempts at dirty jokes. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Live Set, September 11, 1999

For all I know, I'm one of those guys the title refers to. As live music goes, these guys are outstanding. They played in Tulsa a few years back and performed some of the songs on this cd. They are, in a word, FUNNY. The lyrics are smart, with a mean streak, and they play the music as good as or better than the artists they're parodying. Their original material is great, too. How many guys do you know who can play a guitar like Jimi Hendrix on an instrument shaped like a map of the U.S.A.? Purple Haze/Green Acres is a comedy classic. I would love them to release some of their other work to cd: songs like Shake a Snake, The Fish Song (possibly the punniest song ever written), Three Mile Island, and Blue Hairs Driving in My Lane.

Keep 'em coming, boys!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff Here, August 7, 2001
This review is from: Live in Front of a Bunch of D-Ckh--Ds (Audio CD)
Songs like "The Fifties Suck", "Elvis Was a Narc", "Libyan on a Jet Plane" and "The Universal Adjective" (not to mention "I Was a Froggy", the deadliest parody *ever*) deserve five stars.

Some of the spoken "comedy" on this disc deserves *no* stars.

So we'll compromise at four, 'cos you can skip the dumb stuff.

Pinkard & Bowden write brilliant parodies (other titles "Blue Hairs Dribin' in my Lane", "She Thinks I Steal Cars" and, my favourite of their parodies "Music Industry" which skewers both "Islands in the Stream" and the Nashville Establishment brilliantly) and almost-equally-brilliant originals (of which you should try to track down "Dylan for Dollars").

This album collects some of each. "The Fifties Suck" bombs nostalgia in general and the "Happy Days" kind in particular. "Libyan on a Jet Plane" is completely tastelss and somewhat offensive and hilariously funny.

And "I was a Froggy"... well, i won't spoil it. I have seen strong men fall down laughing when this song was played for the first time in their presence.

At one time P&B were working on re-issuing their earlier, vinyl-only studio albums on CD, and one huge, nearly-complete compilation still pops up occasonally on late-nite TV...

But, no matter what, you need *this* disc, if only for "Froggie" and "Elvis was a Narc"

((Incidentally, the last three or four tracks are studio recordings, *not* live.))

5.0 out of 5 stars Old Hippies Never Die (?), November 18, 2000
This review is from: Live in Front of a Bunch of D-Ckh--Ds (Audio CD)
If you have ever bought into the theory that "old hippies never die, they just flash back," maybe "D_ckh__ds" will help dispel that myth. Richard Bowden was once Linda Ronstadt's guitarist (back in her original 'fat-little-county-girl' incarnation), and right now, he's touring with Don Henley, an 'artist' I have absolutely NO use for, but whom others may consider 'hip'). And Sandy Pinkard, God bless the man, has written just about every "my woman done lef' me, so ah gotta git drunk" Country & Western song. They met in 1982, and, apprasing the state of "current music" (whether rock or country) then, they decided to pool their talents, musical AND comedic. And re the latter on this remarkable CD, they note, for instance, that all Elvis' vast arsenal of 'medications' are "out at Graceland somewhere safely hid"; they reflect on a certain TV evangelist, and observe that "crawfish heads ain't the ONLY thing that gets ... down there." The music is beyond brilliant, too. On "The Ballad Of Jimi and Eddie," they actually superimpose the lyrics to the theme from the old '60s tv series, "Green Acres," over Hendrix' "Purple Haze," and it WORKS: PERFECTLY. Maybe this DOES prove that a certain generation, um, "abused substances" too much... This is incredible, folks. If you're at a party (or something), and everyone is bored, just behaving "I'm SO hip," put this CD on. You won't NEED any "intoxicants" thereafter.

Pinkard N Bowden / Live in front of a bunch of D*ckh**ds: Pinkard N Bowden combines comedic stories with mainly country/rock songs (with the exception of their brilliant, short, combination of Jimi Hendrix and Green Acres). As with most live comedy albums, some of the material is stuck in its era (1989). However, this is still a very funny album. Four Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars seymour comedy, February 18, 1999

Bowden's "blue" heritage is embossed by pardner Pinckard's Coonie wit. Tis sort of like putting a "Tiger" in a swamp. As Grizzard succintly said "Shoot low boys they are riding shetland ponies", and their "guns" adhere to theorem well.
