This English sailors' game of yore is deceptively simple: roll the dice and put down tiles that match your roll. But 'shutting the box" - putting all of the tiles down - is harder than it seems! Fun and addictive, you can't play just one game. This Sababa / Front Porch Classic edition of Desktop Shut-The-Box edition boasts a handsome, solid-wood box and handmade wooden dice and tiles. Any number of players, ages 8 to adult.

Fun but Flimsy,

Our whole family loves this game. I like this version because it includes the history and rules of the game on the inside cover. I also like that you can close the cover and not lose the dice. The construction is a little flimsy and there is not enough felt on the board which makes the dice rolling a little noisy. We added a piece of felt on top of the board and it is much better.

This is fun and it makes a great gift. We play while we are watching TV or having a conversation and just pass the box around the room. I have played with eight year olds and sixty year olds. The children love it when they get to "shut the box" and its fun to watch them as they add up the numbers in ther heads. Sometimes, when it's just us "old folks," eveyone puts down a quarter and we play for the "pot".
The bookshelf version of the game not only looks just like another book if you put it on a bookshelf, but it is attractive when you leave it sitting on a coffee table. It is also the best size for passing around. I have played with the bigger chest type box and that one is nice to look at but you usually have to get up out of your seat to hand it to the next person. It is awkward and heavy. This one can be handed over with one hand. Our family enjoys "Shut the Box" so much that I bought several and gave them as gifts.

I have given this game to all of my adult children so they can share and play it with their children. We are a very competitve family and "Shut the Box" let's you compete against your self as well as others. It is great for teaching young children to add and choose number combinations. I am 70 years old and I grew up with this game always out on the breakfast bar in our home. I think my parents placed it there to keep us occupied while waiting to be fed.
