Product Description

Louis Garrel of THE DREAMERS stars as François, a young photographer who begins an intense affair with unstable actress Carole (Laura Smet of THE BRIDESMAID). But when Carole s husband returns and François pursues a new romance with family-minded Eve (Clémentine Poidatz), their delicate worlds will come apart in a heartbreaking reflection of pain, passion and obsession. If love is ultimately a universe of two, is there any escaping the one we truly desire? Director Philippe Garrel (REGULAR LOVERS) creates a sensuous journey through melancholy via sumptuous black and white cinematography and electrifying performances for a film that critics worldwide have compared to the best of Cocteau and Antonioni.

A fatalistic romance and a lovely work, suffused with a deep melancholy that seems etched
into each of its beautifully lighted images. --New York Times

An extravagant, heartfelt blend of tenderness, pain and longing. --The New Yorker

Format: DVD
Frontier of Dawn debuted at the Cannes Film Festival to largely mixed reviews. The film is directed by Philippe Garrel and stars his son Louis Garrel, best known to audiences for his role in The Dreamers. I don't like the term "art film" as I feel there's something very pretentious about the term and it's used frequently by people as a negative term to describe a film that didn't engage them and was incredibly slow-moving. Having said that, Frontier of Dawn is very much an art film that will divide those who watch it. The film is very well-made and, for me, evoked a mood reminiscent of Antonioni by way of Rohmer but once the film ended, the word "masterpiece" never occurred to me. Be forewarned: the film moves at a snail's pace.

Garrel plays François, a photographer who is hired to photograph Carole (Laura Smet), a troubled actress. With Carole's husband in Hollywood, her and François begin an affair. Their affair begins with no build-up and no elaboration; it simply begins. As the film progresses, their relationship grows more intense. Soon the two claim they love each other, but there's no romanticism in the relationship. This relationship between the two is the film's driving plot point, although not the main arc of the story as François begins a relationship with Eve (Clèmentine Poidatz), causing Carole to completely unravel.

The film uses stark, realistic black & white photography to paint it's portrait of love, longing, and obsession. It's this stripped-down plot, stark cinematography, uses of silent film techniques, and poetic dialogue that Philippe Garrel uses to make clear he possesses the heart of an artist. As a piece of cinema, not much is done wrong here but the script by Garrel, Marc Cholodenko, and Arlette Langmann leaves a lot to be desired.

I totally did not get what Louis Garrel was doing with this unpleasant and pretentious woman who was not only suicidal but an arsonist with no consideration for property owners!
