Editorial Reviews

The Three Mesquiteers was the umbrella title for a series of fifty-one B-westerns released between 1936 and 1943. The films featured the characters Stony Brooke, Tucson Smith and Lullaby Joslin as the threesome, played by many B-western stars of that era. In 1938, John Wayne took over for Robert Livingston as Stony Brooke and starred in eight Mesquiteers films between 1938 and 1939, he was joined by Ray Corrigan as Tucson Smith and Max Terhune as Lullaby Joslin for the first six and Raymond Hatton as Rusty Joslin for the last two. all eight films were directed by George Sherman (Big Jake). John Ford's Stagecoach was perfectly sandwiched between the eight films and John Wayne portrayal of the outlaw gunfighter, The Ringo Kid, made him a superstar and ended Wayne's Stony Brooke run. Livingston was rehired as Brooke and went on to make fourteen more Mesquiteers films and for an incredible total of twenty-nine. In Frontier Horizon aka New Frontier (the final Wayne Mesquiteers film) - planning to build a reservoir on the site, the state government has condemned the town of New Hope and surrounding ranches. The state intends to compensate the landowners fairly, but a crooked real-estate promoter has different plans. The landowners lead by our three heroes ride into action, fighting back against the state and the crooks. Featuring Jennifer Jones (Duel in the Sun) in her screen debut, billed under her real name of Phyllis Isley.

New Frontier was the original theatrical title for this film. Frontier Horizon was the title used for TV syndication to distinguish the 1939 film from Wayne's earlier, 1935, film of the same title. They are not the same story, but Republic occasionally reused titles for different scripts. This film has location work at the movie ranch, now a public park, once owned by Ray Corrigan. If you know the film, you can go to the park, which is in Simi Valley, and spot the locations. The big rock with the hole in it is there, but the hole is covered with brush. The film material is very good. For fans of the early Wayne films at Republic, grab them while they are available in new transfers.

Being a John Wayne fan since a child ( about 60 years ago ), I loved his "B" westerns. The "Three Mesquiteer" films were my favorite. Corny at times, but fun. I especially enjoyed the music in his 8 films. The title and action music was different than in the other "3 M" films with Bob Livingston. I found at the Autry Museum, a CD with all the music from "B" westerns. Fun to listen to while driving. All this just returns me to a period lost on todays computer kids. Too bad.

John Wayne, Ray Corrigan and Raymond Hatton are one of the best trigger trios ever namely the Three Mesquiteers. The print is good and sharp and there are lots of riding, fighting and shooting. Some seconds of the action and stunts are fill-ins from older movies and that's a bit irritating but one can live with it. It is always a pleasure to see great actors like Leroy Mason, Eddy Waller, Jack Ingram and many more. Billed under her real name Phyllis Isley, you are witness to the film debut of Jennifer Jones. And then it is a bit funny to think that this b-western is from the same year that Wayne starred in John Ford's Stagecoach.

Another excellent John Wayne "B" movie, one needs to like J.Wayne plus being able to enjoy the early movies, they are poor qulity compaired to today's hi-tech movies. It is cute to watch these early producers and how they slip in some special effects.
