Product Description

Frontier Natural Products - Nutritional Yeast Mini Flakes - 1 lb. (453 g) Frontier Natural Products Nutritional Yeast Mini Flakes contains non-irradiated yeast that is freshness dated. To ensure fresh flavor that's always pure and natural, Frontier's spices are quality tested and freshness dated. Produced by culturing yeast with sugarcane and beet molasses, nutritional yeast has a strong flavor described as nutty, cheesy, or creamy. Used in place of Parmesan cheese, or as a topping for popcorn, it's a source of protein and B-complex vitamins, and naturally low in fat and sodium. Botanical name: Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This is a primary grown nutritional yeast from pure strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown on mixtures of cane and beet molasses. After the fermentation process is completed the yeast is harvested, thoroughly washed, pasteurized, and dried on roller drum dryers. The B vitamins are both naturally produced during fermentation, and added to the cream prior to the drying process. Riboflavin (B2) and Cyanocobalamin (B12) are created during fermentation. Additional Riboflavin (B2) and Cyanocobalamin (B12) are added after fermentation along with Thiamine (B1), Pyridoxine HCL (B6), Niacin and Folic Acid. Quality Notes: Due to the naturally occurring color variation of the molasses culture used to grow this yeast, some color variation may be present in the finished product. It has a nutty, cheesy taste.

This one is a fine powder so it's really nice stirred into soups and served on top of pasta.
Jacqueline Fisch - Barefoot Essence
They're the best I've found, way better than the stuff you get at the health food store.

In addition to being a "Superfood" (from the Westin-Price Foundation's list), this brand is reported to be produced using low temperatures. High temperature nutritional yeast products apparently yield elevated concentrations of the excitotoxin glutamate as a by-product. This is why I chose Frontier Nutritional Yeast over Red Star.

O.k. so I want to put to rest some worries and concerns people have. As the previous reviewers have stated this product is produced at a lower temp and therefore has less chance of containing MSG. As far as taste goes it is awesome, it is not addicting as one would associate with a MSG laden product. And compared to Red Star it is going to taste less desirable, however it is my understanding that Red Star's parent organization is a major producer of flavor and food enhancers, so you can put two and two together and figure out why so many people pick Red Star over this. I have ordered two bags already, and i am getting ready to order a third. I know when I have eaten MSG as a vegan it readily affects my stomach and head, and this yeast has no effect on me. It tastes great and I use it in a lot of my recipes for the added b vitamins.

This is an excellent nutritional yeast, grown from molasses, so it is gluten free. It is produced at low temperatures, so no MSG is formed. It dissolves easily, which is a necessity when using it for making the Weston A Price Foundation homemade baby formula. It has a delicious flavor and our family loves it sprinkled on popcorn. I've also heard it's good sprinkled on steamed veggies such as broccoli, although I haven't tried this yet.

Having used Kal, Red Star, and then this brand, I must say that these have a less desirable flavor than the before mentioned brands. They smell different and taste slightly different. I will probably go back to the Kal brand.

We've been using this for years, bought from the bulk food bins so I really never knew what brand I was buying till I went for a refill and nobody had it anymore. Then came the big search. The main thing I knew about it was that it was mini flake.

As I looked online, I realized I could end up spending a lot of money and end up with a lot of yeast we didn't like. So I picked up some Bob's in powder form locally, to try. Didn't care for the smell so I was hesitant about actually using it, but I hadn't quite run out yet. Then wonder of wonders a local store had Frontier mini flake and when I bought some and got it home, I knew it was the mini flake we all knew and loved!

Taste, of course, is a matter of taste! Well this is the one for us. I really have to wonder about the reviewers (of other brands) who say the yeast tastes like cheese. ???? I think they've been vegan so long they don't really remember cheese. Anyway I'm not looking for imitation cheese.

The things I use this for are:
add to soup
add to gravy
mix with wheat germ and cornmeal as a breading for deep-fried marinated tofu (only make that for special occasions anymore)
mix with salt and garlic powder for popcorn (spray with Pam-type butter-flavor spray, then sprinkle and stir)

The mini flake is a size that works for all these purposes. I've used large flake for breading and that works fine but it wouldn't work so well on popcorn. Powder is too fine for breading but would probably be OK for my other uses. We're very happy to find this yeast.

I had only had flakes before. I had no idea the powder form would be different, but it is. The product is not in flake form. It's fine, but the flavor, blending and texture of actual flaked nutritional yeast is better.

This product really does taste nice. I like the taste a lot.

But I am not convinced this is a healthy product, even if it is recommended by the WAPF of whom I am a huge supporter. I have been reading online since I bought it that it has an effect on the body just the same as if you had eaten MSG or any other yeast product such as brewers yeast. That explained a lot to me, as I had been experiencing some weird symptoms after using this product but wasn't sure what the cause might be. This product is also nice tasting but can make you feel weirdly compelled to keep eating it, just like MSG foods do. I understand this brand claims to have less MSG-effect than other brands but less is not none, is my point. Each to their own but for me it did seem to have a noticeable effect and I know others have had the same issues.

It is also not really a food based supplement at all, as the yeast is pasturised making it a heavily processed food and not in the 'real food' category at all. It also contains added synthetic vitamins (so why not just take those at proper doses and in optimal forms in the first place?), and worst of all, the worst form of B12 that educated nutritional experts tell you to always avoid because it needs to be detoxified; cyanocobalamin!

I wont be rebuying this. I feel like coenzymated B complex sublinguals or liver, or liver capsules are a far more body friendly and far more effective way of getting B vitamins in as is taking a probiotic to promote the good bugs and their making of B vitamins in the gut.
