Frontiera of the Procession is a 1972 album of acoustic guitar led alternating containment and raw heavy rock. Followed by Fiaba, and then after several years prepared the way for Esplorare for Electromantic. The Procession as many other groups need more promotion, Frontiera is very intrigued by the cover, but was issued shortly. Gianfranco Gaza is a singer perfectly suited with a more histrionic singers and heavy rock band composed largely of guitars, bass and drums, with a little 'mandolin, mellotron and flute that you must turn in a beautiful performance in moving between light and shadow and the heavier moments with conviction and ease. The album is now available on CD, but it would have been more attractive port with the added bonus-tracks or the presence of new versions of songs already published, as was the case for Exploring.

Are you the kind of progressive rock fan who is always on the lookout for great albums that slipped through the cracks? As one of those people, I will just say that this particular album stimulated the musical part of my brain better than any progressive rock album I have listened to in recent memory. What struck the most about this record - besides "why haven't I heard this yet?" - is that this band has their own identity. There are tinges of Robert Fripp-esque guitar play here and there and the vocals are reminiscent of Yes' Jon Anderson (if he sang in Italian, of course), but when it comes down to it, Procession really has its own distinct sound. I also love the seemingly random way Frontiera is structured. The whole thing comes across as a jam session with a bunch of good friends who are obviously having a fun time. For instance, just when I thought it was letting up, here comes the rollicking, folksy "Un'ombra Che Vaga," which is possibly my favorite song on the album. Besides giving the album a playful, unpredictable quality, the unconventional song order is also exciting in how it suggests that Procession was dabbling in what at the time was a relatively new genre of music. Overall, whether you tastes veer towards mainstream or obscure progressive rock, Frontiera is a must-have for your collection.
