Book Description

Using new archival material from Ottoman, Arabic and European sources, Eugene Rogan documents the case of Transjordan to provide a theoretically informed account of how the Ottoman state restructured itself during the last decades of its empire. In so doing, he explores the idea of frontier as a geographical and cultural boundary and sheds light on the processes of state formation that led to the creation of the Middle East as it is today. The book concludes with an examination of the Ottoman legacy in the modern state of Jordan.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Rogan's study makes a significant contribution to scholarly discussions of Ottoman and Middle Eastern history by pointing out just how effective Ottoman provincial administration could be in the late nineteenth century." History

"By choosing to differentiate between the construction of a state infrastructure and the creation of a nation, Rogan offers a new context in which to think of the late Ottoman period, the subsequent creation of Transjordan/Jordan, and nation and state-building in general. This book is thus a much-welcomed addition to each of these literatures." Arab Studies Journal

"...Rogan utilizes Ottoman state documents, European diplomatic sources, and memoirs. Rogan's book is beautifully clear and well organized." - Linda T. Darling, University of Arizona

This valuable book:
Is very informative, straight to the point & brief making it one enjoyable reading experience. It Sheds some light on an era that preceded the creation of Jordan (pre Arab revolt), referencing and footnoting many archival documents and memoirs.
From an architect's perspective, it also briefly talks about the architecture of Salt and its development, it also relates it to the various socio-economic changes that helped create it. The language is queen's English and cross references Arabic(Jordanian)& Turkish words in many occasions. It is worth mentioning that the origins of certain Jordanian families & tribes are mentioned and traced back in time.

Furthermore, the book talks about the Karak revolt and its horrible consequences on people of Transjordan.

I wish the book presented more illustrations and photos. I also wonder if referencing medieval Islamic books would have added more to its content, nevertheless I personally salute the author and those who helped in creating the book.

To give you an idea of the difficulties which the Turkish government supposed there would be for an Englishman to go to Kerek and Wady Mousa, it is necessary to say that when Mr. Bankes applied at Constantinople to have these places inserted in his firman, they returned for answer, "that they knew of none such within the Grand Seignior's dominions." Read the first page
