Editorial Reviews

Behind the enduring images of heroic rescues undertaken by the New Orleans Police Department in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, there is another story of law enforcement in crisis, even out of control. Law & Disorder, a year-long, ongoing collaboration among FRONTLINE, ProPublica and the New Orleans Times-Picayune, investigates charges that NOPD officers inappropriately used lethal force against New Orleans citizens and then tried to cover up their actions. Airing days before the fifth anniversary of one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history and drawing from reports published in a real-time online investigation, FRONTLINE takes a fresh look at how the NOPD performed when the rules of civilized society collapsed.

Working with ProPublica and the New Orleans newspaper "Times-Picayune", Frontline has produced LAW & DISORDER (2010), a horrifying look at the abuses and murder perpetrated by the New Orleans Police Department (I even hesitate to capitalize "Police Department" in this case).

First, let's hear from ProPublica themselves:"ProPublica is an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. Our work focuses exclusively on truly important stories, stories with "moral force." We do this by producing journalism that shines a light on exploitation of the weak by the strong and on the failures of those with power to vindicate the trust placed in them."

In this documentary, reporter A.C. Thomas went in 2008 in search of the true story of the murder and incineration of one Henry Glover, New Orleans resident and family man. In order to keep this aligned with the documentary itself, I will say: Glover, as far as we can tell a complete innocent, was murdered by NOLA police officers, then taken to a nearby levee on the Mississippi and burned (car and all). This shocker comes in the wake of the family's 3-year search for the truth.

During the first week after Hurricane Katrina hit, Glover was shot and as his brother and a good Samaritan tried to get him help, the police severely beat and arrested both Glover's brother and the good Samaritan. After this, Glover himself, bleeding to death, was driven off by the police, never to be seen again until news of his fate surfaced in 2008.

All this relates to the orders given within the NOPD to retake the city, to shoot "looters" (read: any black person nearby).
