Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Reissue of this 1994 album, the second full-length release from the Norwegian Progressive Metal band. This album is where the band started to incorporate Viking Metal influences to their sound. The Black Metal sections appears to be Enslaved at their fastest and most violent. This would be the last album to feature drummer Trym Torson before he joined Emperor.

4.0 out of 5 stars "draw sword...fight with the war god!", October 7, 2005
This review is from: Frost (Audio CD)
there's only a handful of bands that get me as excited as Enslaved! they combine blazing fast drumming with excellent and memorable riffs to create the ultimate in destructive and majestic Viking metal! they write amazingly epic songs of apocalyptic battles fought on misty shores and distant mountains; with an emphasis on violence, bloodshed, and an affiliation with ancient Norse gods. all things in the true Viking spirit, then.
the music on Frost is usually blindingly fast and raw, but with lots of subtle touches that add a dark flourish to the proceedings and keep it interesting for the listener. there are a few keyboard passages popping up for atmospheric effect and even a mouthharp makes an appearance! but even with all these different elements, Enslaved's music remains rooted in the frozen mystical metal world. a world where a thirst for blood and conquest rule, and where victory awaits!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Norwegian metal, August 21, 2002
By Scott Waisman (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Frost (Audio CD)
Frost is the second full length album from Enslaved, third official release if you include the split album "Emperor/Enslaved". It's a departure from the remarkable debut "Vikingligr Veldi", an epic that consisted of five 6-11 minute songs. Here most songs are between 4 and 7 minutes, which works very well since the band has been able to cut out the needless guitar riff repetition that was a flaw of the debut. The tracks on "Frost" have all the energy and intensity of the debut but in a pared down format. Also interesting is hearing the mighty Trym on one of his earliest recordings. If you didn't know, Trym went on to join Emperor from the "Anthems" album, and is today one of the preeminent drummers in the extreme metal scene. Vocals are similar to the debut, the same high pitched screeching, and the guitars sound powerful, with acoustic sounds being thrown into this album more, giving it a folk metal feel at times. Less overt use of keyboards this time around too, although there are some sparingly placed electronic sounds thrown in for atmosphere.

Mostly though Frost is fast, hard, and powerful metal, not created for selling lots of albums but rather to present the vision of the band. Here is a metal album intended for careful listening not for mindless headbanging and beer drinking. Lyrics are sung in Norwegian, but English translation is included in the well done booklet.

Best song: Svarte Vidder

5.0 out of 5 stars $251.51 for a cd?, November 24, 2004
By Snuggly "The Magical Nya Nya of Power" (The Isle of Lack a Knookie) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Frost (Audio CD)
I think Enslaved are an amazing band, I highly recommend all their work, but unless they plan on delivering the cd via viking long boat themselves, that price is a bit too steep.

I'll assume the price is in error, and this is my half-assed attempt at humor.

So, once it's fixed do yourselves a favor and order it.
