Book Description

May 29, 2012 Mythos Academy
Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects - and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I'm also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me? It turns out my mom hid a powerful artefact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can't use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me - and I'm in for the fight of my life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Book of the Series..so far. June 4, 2012
Format:Paperback
Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep is the third book in her Mythos Academy series. I found Dark Frost to be an excellent and enjoying read. This is the best book of the series. The story picks up where Kiss of Frost leaves off.Gwen Frost is our heroine, and continues to have a hard time of it. However, in this book she comes into her own, with her powers, and with her relationship with Logan. Throughout the book, their relationship is hot and cold, but mainly due each unable to trust each other with their past and/or abilities.

Carson, Daphne, Gwen and Logan are together right from the start, as the action begins almost immediately. The day before they are to return to school, they must all fulfill an assignment at the museum, and it seems most of the students from Mythos Academy also waited for the last day. They are all attacked by the Reapers, who are searching for the Helheim Dagger. Gwen, Logan, Daphne and Carson were in the weapon room, as the fight started. They were able to use some of those weapons to stop the Reapers, but not before some deaths occurred. Carson was close to death, and in a very emotional moment was saved by Daphne, who discovered her powers.

Before they escaped, Gwen came face to face with her nemesis Loki's Champion, who eventually also escapes. Gwen is determined to find out who she is, so that she can avenge her mother's death. Gwen takes it upon herself to investigate the possible whereabouts of the dagger before the Reapers come back to find it. It is the Helheim Dagger that is instrumental in freeing Loki from his prison. The story was very exciting throughout, and we learned a lot more in this book.

Gwen has been flawed somewhat early on, but in this book she is smart, brave and uses her ability wisely to enable her to find the clues, and she makes a wonderful heroine. The last half of the book is non stop, as we discover who Loki's champion is; Daphne powers, much to her dislike; Logan's fears that stopped him from totally trusting Gwen; Gwen's full powers come forth and Preston returns.

One of the best things in the story was seeing the Fenrir wolf come back, and how Gwen becomes close to the wolf, who will also play a big part at the end. The wild ending with all hell breaking loose, and lives at risk, had some suprises. There are so many questions as we race to the finish...Will Gwen find the Helheim dagger before the Reapers? Will Lokie return to create chaos? Will Logan and Gwen finally come together? How will Gwen handle the truth about her powers?

Jennifer Estep does a wonderful job with this book, and continuing the storyline flawlessly. Dark Frost is action filled, and if you are a fan of the Mythos Academy series, you will not be disappointed. This book was very good and exciting.

3.0 out of 5 stars I like this series but.... June 2, 2012

Gwen was a complete idiot in this book. Anyone who reads this book should have the bad guy figured out as soon as they're introduced (or shortly afterwards) but Gwen couldn't figure it out until he/she unmasked his/herself. Gwen is completely shocked and I wanted to shake her for being so bloody blind! All the clues were painfully obvious. Too obvious. I'm wondering if because the series is aimed at young adults that the author felt she had to dumb it down. Which is insulting on a lot of levels. A 7 year old could've figured out the "mystery" of this book.

The other part that bugged me about Gwen is her relationship with Logan. Is it just me or is she always apologizing to him for things that aren't her fault? I can't say more without giving anything away but her constant apologizing was starting to grate on my nerves.

Don't get me wrong, I still sorta liked the book and we were introduced to a new character which I LOVED but we didn't spend enough time on the really good parts of the book. Gwen's friendship with Daphne. Daphne's relationship with Carson which looked like it hit a bump but then that bump was forgotten. Gwen's rivalry with Savannah. Etc. These were all good things to go over but they got shuffled to the bottom of the deck while Gwen agonized over Logan and figuring out where the dagger was (which she should've figured out WAY sooner).

One other thing that is starting to bother me about all of Estep's book (including her Assassin series) is her repetitive use of the same adjectives. She calls Daphne "Daphne" in the first sentence and then calls her the Valkyrie the second time she's mentioned. Then back to Daphne, then Valkyrie, etc. The same for Logan. It's Logan, then Spartan, then Logan, then Spartan. It goes on and on for every character. Name first, followed by their class. The same for her "gypsy gift". It's Gypsy Gift, then Gypsy magic, THEN psychometry (sp) magic and back around again. Her other series does the same thing. Name, powers, name, powers. Even certain sentences are feeling like they're copied and pasted.

Feels like a drinking game should be created.

Again, it's an okay book but nowhere near what the author is capable of. Really hoping Crimson Frost is better. Let's get this series back on track and make Gwen back into a smart girl again.

"Dark Frost" by Jennifer Estep is the next in the mesmerizing Mythos Academy series, a group of young adult paranormal books that follow Gwen Frost, the seventeen year old Gypsy who has the gift of psychometry (the ability to read past events by touching an object). She and her friends are continuing to train against the threat of the Reapers of Chaos who are trying to regain the Helheim dagger so that they can free the imprisoned god Loki. Gwen doubts her abilities as the champion of Nike even though she has the magical sword Vic to help her but she is slowly improving in her fighting skills. The Fenrir wolf that she saved becomes an unlikely ally but Gwen seems destined to lose to the Reaper girl who has frightening access to almost everywhere, including the ostensibly protected campus. Gwen is also troubled by her nebulous relationship to Logan Quinn, the Spartan that she has long admired who is reluctant to commit despite the beautiful necklace he has given her. Everyone has secrets and Logan is no exception. The question is whether Gwen is going to survive long enough to figure out where the dagger is, what she means to Logan and how to get through all of her classes at Mythos. Naturally, some of those goals are more important to her than others.

The books in this series never fail to provide a very entertaining story that conjures up both the paranormal world and a typical high school environment complete with gossip, bullying and plenty of angst. Gwen is not such an outsider as before and is grappling with her own inadequacies as well as the startling revelations about some of her schoolmates but she is starting to find a little self-confidence. Her on-again off-again relationship with Logan as well as the communication difficulty that she encounters with her friend Daphne mirror the awkwardness that many young adults face as they struggle with their identities and this is compounded by the serious tasks that these special youngsters face. There is a heartwarming additional thread involving the Fenrir wolf that will appeal to anyone who tried to sneak in a four-footed addition to the family as well as additional revelations about Gwen's mom. Another intriguing chapter in Gwen's life delivered in an enjoyable tale that combines amazing fight scenes, glimpses of mythological figures and the drama of teen life.
