An average but still entertaining story, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Frostfire (Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles, 1.1) (Audio CD)
Vicki recounts the time the TARDIS landed in Regency London. It was bitterly cold--so cold that the Thames had frozen over and people were enjoying a frost fair on the ice. The Doctor and his companions soon fell in with an upper-class couple and went to view a display of curiosities. As Vicki examined a strange egg, she saw an eye looking back at her through a narrow crack--the eye of a creature that could destroy the whole planet.
Now, before I critique this, let me say that I am a fan of Big Finish Productions. The audio effects, music, and voice acting are all top-drawer. The stories themselves are usually pretty decent and on occasion nothing short of brilliant. I've bought a lot of Big Finish CDs and, while I haven't been enraptured with all them, there is not a one of them I regret purchasing.
Having said that, Frostfire is not my favourite. Part of it is simply that I'm not that familiar with most of the episodes Vicki appeared in.
Despite the lovely little twist at the end, it isn't what I'd call an instant classic. While I have no doubt that I will listen to the story again at some point, it didn't make me want to hit replay when it came to an end.
Ms O'Brien deserves kudos for a fine performance that included both reading text and acting--not an easy task I would imagine. Writer Marc Platt (who also wrote the episode "Ghost Light" back in the late 1980s) not only gives fans a chance to revisit the Hartnell era but also offers us a peek at what happened to Vicki after she left the TARDIS crew.
Overall, I give Frostfire 3 stars out of 5--a solid but average offering.
