The "Frozen Assets" of the title belong to Edmund Biffen Christopher and they are the legacy of his Godfather which he will receive if he manages to avoid been arrested, something of a previous habit of Biffen's, until after his thirtieth birthday one week hence. Lord Tilbury, proprietor of the Mammoth publish company, whom we met previously in "Bill the Conqueror", 'Summer Lightning" and "Heavy Weather", is keen that Biffen does fall foul of the law as he will then receive the legacy himself. Tilbury has therefore engaged his usual henchman, Percy Pilbeam, to ensure that Biffen is lead astray and that it is brought to the attention of the constabulary. Only Wodehouse can scare up a happy ending where everyone gets exactly what is coming to them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in Evelyn Waugh The handsome bindings are only the cherry on top of what is already a cake without compare. Evening Standard

5.0 out of 5 stars A comedic treasure, April 12, 2011
What can I say about P. G. Wodehouse that hasn't been said before? Words like "comedic genius" and "master wordsmith" routinely pop up in critiques of his extensive body of work - and with good reason.

So just how good is Wodehouse? Well, in Frozen Assets, he had me chuckling on the first page and belly laughing on the second. In between fits of laughter, I was repeatedly dazzled by the sheer brilliance of his use of language. Most of us write sentences; Wodehouse crafted literary works of art.

Frozen Assets is the usual frothy mix of light romance and high farce. Biff Christopher is thrilled to learn his godfather has left him ten million dollars - provided Biff doesn't run afoul of the law before his thirtieth birthday. Publishing magnate Lord Tilbury thinks he has grounds to contest the will, but just to be safe, he employs Percy Pilbeam to ensure that Biff gets arrested. Naturally, much hilarity ensues.

First published as Biffen's Millions in 1964, this edition from Overlook Press presents the full text from the first UK edition. Featuring acid-free paper and full cloth covers, this Collector's Edition belongs on the shelf of every Wodehouse devotee.

4.5 stars.
