Book Description

January 2000
A nonfiction true crime book about an Alaskan Police Chief's experience while pursuing political corruption & massive land fraud perpetrated against federal& state governments from pre-statehood days onward. Reprisals included constant threats on his line, the killing of his dogs, the loss of his home & the breakup of his family. The story is an uphill battle not only against a corrupt City Hall, but against apathetic public officials who looked the other way & refused to become involved.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Frozen Shield, a well-researched expose, is a story of the worst practices of small-town America of the past. Told from an experienced, righteous cop's point of view, the reader learns how Alaskan politicians lined their pockets with impunity, using innovative means and schemes that would have made any Tammany Hall politico proud. As the police chief in one of those towns , Nick Mangieri fought the system, doggedly battled the politicians, exposed their misdeeds and still lost. Frozen Shield is a sobering chronicle of what 's wrong in the Far North. -- Dan Mahoney, ret NYPD Capt., Author of 'Black and White' and 'The Edge of the City'.

Nick Mangieri really knows how to tell a story. Frozen Shield comes at you like an artic blast. Mangieri weaves action and deception, both political and legal, in this fascinating account of a beleaguered lawman who refuses to be buried by a system as old and dangerous as the barren, icy landscape. -- Ed Dee, ret NYPD Lt. Author of 'Little Boy Blue' and 'Nightbird'.

Mangieri's account of crime and corruption in the Far North, circa mid 1970s, is compelling. This book brings to mind the nonfiction of Peter Maas, author of Serpico and The Valachi Papers. However, Mangieri's work has a sharper edge, simply by virtue of the fact that it is based on his personal experiences and is told in his own words.

I have read this book twice. This is an excellent read and brings out the games that some politicians play to the forefront for public consumption. The abuse of power is noted and is weaved into the realm of organizational behavior. The author applied for the position of Chief of Police of Palmer, Alaska, and was subsequently hired to that most responsible position. He performed his obligated duties very professionally and brought his department up to high standards. During the course of his duties he received information of illegal activities concerning a land scheme. His investigation shook up some of the principals involved in unethical and crooked practices. The Chief and his family were placed in jepoardy and two dogs owned by the Chief & family were killed. The Chief pursued the white collar crooks with tenacity, intestional fortitude and determination, criminally, and sought civil remedies, to a point where the Chief was fired, as he closed in on the corruption, taking place. This, sorry to say, is true reality in many corners of our great land. and this particular event was ferreted out by a true professional, who placed his own life in jepoardy to make a wrong, right. There's that ole saying, I believe, "you can't fight city hall." Come on, Citizens, let's make these people accountable for their criminality. Read the book twice. The author did a great service for all of us.

When by-the-book meets good-ol-boy. And you thought this only happened in the South! Mangieri's book is not over-the-top,it involves real police work in real police situations (and everything that involves).
Honest men are hard to find, but you've found one here. I can't wait to see the movie!
