Product Description

This special collection features four specials, each examining a different aspect of the Ice Age. It's a remarkable journey from the primitive man who inhabited the planet to a volcanic eruption and its devastating impact, to a fascinating look at a changing world and the cost of survival, to an exploration into the possibilities of another Ice Age.

We start with Clash of the Cavemen, which compares the Neanderthals with the Cro-Magnons and follows them through a bone-chilling Ice Age winter, ending with the extinction of one species. Next, Volcanic Winter goes back 75,000 years to trace the impact of a volcanic eruption - how it may have pushed the planet into an ice age and how it could have brought humanity to the edge of extinction. Then, take a Journey to 10,000 BC for the real story of life on earth during that time to unravel the geologic mystery surrounding the first environmental crisis faced by man. And finally, Mega Freeze asks if an Ice Age could happen again and if, in fact, it may already be too late to prevent a global disaster.

DISC 1: Clash of the Cavemen / Volcanic Winter

DISC 2: Journey to 10,000 BC / Mega Freeze

This isn't the story of the ice age. That title is very misleading. That would be a great show to be done though. This instead is ice age related, first we get two excellent episodes of megadisasters. one about supervolcanoes and one about how quickly a ice age can develop. (in as little as ten years!) and the fact that we went through a miniice age from 1350-1800 that really caused alot of death and devastation. particularily in it's early part with a third at least of the worlds population dying. the other two are about cavemen during the iceage and the period when the ice age ended in 10,000 b.c. So you get alot of information here and the most important part is about how the rising temperature of the earth can cause the ocean currents to collapse and throw us into a ice age again. ( a minione and that was quite brutal enough!) The caveman one was my least favorite as it supposes our early ancestors wiped out the neanderthal humans. In fact there wasn't hardly any of either species around , so it's hard to imagine the need to wipe out anyone. The story is more complex and we now know that most modern humans have neanderthal genes in them. so... Anyways this is a great package and the dvd's look great as these shows are all from the last 6 years. So they look as good as they can on standard dvd. I am still waiting for a real story of the ice age that begins 2,000,000 years ago and well it hasn't ended yet.

If you are interested in mankind's populating the world, this is a wonderful DVD to add to your collection. The History Channel does a fine job of educating the public with their fine products.

I was hoping that the video was more of a docu-drama than this was presented. The video was average in presentation, dry, repetitive, and disaster graphics below average. The Clash of the Cavement was horrible. Journey to 10,000 B.C. was better and the others were okay in presentation. Each of the four episodes have about 25-35 minutes of actual content. I admit the discussion about the Ice Age was informative but the continual repetition of the content was distracting. I guess this is standard History Channel fare.
