1.0 out of 5 stars Not written for modern times May 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's quite obvious in reading these recipes that the author just found his grandmother's recipe box from the 1950's and decided to make a book. But the recipes are written in a very casual, incomplete way, and you have to have a great knowledge of cooking in order to use this book (for instance, canning recipes with no directions on canning). Many of the recipes list "1 can" but don't say what size can, there are multiple instances of misspelling (egg "yoke" instead of yolk), and most of the casserole recipes call for baking in the oven for way too long (the Simple Savory Spaghetti states to cook for 1 1/2 hours? And doesn't mention what temperature to cook at). And the cookie recipes that don't have actual measurements for flour are baffling--it states "flour, to thicken enough for mixture to drop from spoon". What on earth does that mean?

Please go back through this book and clear up these recipes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Frugal cooking for simple living May 18, 2013

There are some fairly old and traditional recipes in this book. Many are interesting and taste good too.
The book will not be frugal to use for all the recipes as the heavy usage of nuts will cost quite a lot nowadays unless there is access to nut trees or to swopping other items to obtain pound bags of them.
The recipes are useful to carnivores and vegetarians which does open it to a wider audience. There is not that much use of vegetables nor fruits but these can be added to suit the dish or the individual. There are some useful preserves recipes too.
I really like this book and would have appreciated some photographs but also some stories as it went along as it is exactly the kind of book that would suit this type of presentation style.

Plenty of great recipes to choose from, and all of them easy to prepare. A lot of these are tried and true dishes we remember from childhood, staples of mom's cooking skills thanks to the ease of preparation and inexpensive ingredients needed to make them. There were also a number of ones we'd never seen before, such as the Cuban Bread and Iberian Rice (which has bacon and you cannot go wrong with bacon infused recipes!) The homestyle macaroni and cheese was a huge hit with me as a kid and will be for your's as well. I also like that the directions are clearly written and simple to understand.

4.0 out of 5 stars frugal cooking January 7, 2014
By Liz H.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Overall this was a good read for frugal recipes. I did not give it 5 stars because there are some obvious misspellings, yoke for yolk for example. Also, there were some recipes that simply were not frugal, for example one that asked for veal. Additionally, some recipes are not up to date as far as food safety, parafin used for canning jelly as an example.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cookbook! June 23, 2013
By Janet
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
On the first pages, the author gives his reasons for a frugal lifestyle and the benefits of using money wisely. Also, the reasons for cooking at home are so many, that who would want to eat out after reading them?
Then, on to the recipes.... there are many old fashioned ones for dumplings and noodles, muffins and donuts.... included are main dishes, casseroles, desserts, preserves and many others.
One added plus for this cookbook is, that the recipes use ingredients that are in most kitchens already. These are hearty recipes that will satisfy the most hungry person.... and all made simply and frugally.
