1.0 out of 5 stars Frugal Book, January 8, 2009
By Kelley Wilkinson (Asheville, NC) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With so many fabulous books on raw food information and preparation available these days,
I have to be convinced to add yet another one to my extensive library. The one review that I was able to read about this book gave it a glowing review and mentioned the wonderful photographs, which I admit I always love in a cookbook, so I ordered it. Her tips about frugality are nothing more than common sense, and a few substitutions, such as using cheaper sunflower seeds in place of more expensive nuts in recipes, buying in bulk, limiting your shopping trip to $10 or $20, and asking produce managers for older food or bigger bag discounts. Recipes are, for the most part, simple and uninspiring. (Example: Guacamole Recipe-Avocados, tomato, onion, jalapeño pepper, lemon juice, salt and pepper.) I would highly recommend looking at books by authors such as Gabriel Cousins, (Conscious Eating, Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine), Alissa Cohen (Living on Live Food, she has a food preparation DVD also), Matt Amsden (Rawvolution), the Boutenko family (see their rawfamily website), Matthew Kenny, (Everyday Raw), Ani Phyo (Ani's Raw food Kitchen), Cafe Gratitude ( I am Grateful and Sweet Gratitude,) Wendy Rudell (Raw Transformation,) David Wolfe, René Underkoffler, Carol Alt (has some interesting information for beginners or those who aren't ready for vegetarianism), even the 'Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw'. There are many more who I didn't mention.

If the book had been in the $12-$14 range, I would have held my tongue. For $28 I expected much, much more. This book is obviously a home published variety, and the quality is not what one would expect for the price. If one were to compare the price of $28 to Alissa Cohen's book, (which is 3 times the size, professional quality, nice fonts, wonderful photos and extensive information) to this book at approximately the same price, you would understand what I am speaking of. Her recipes are fairly simple and redundant from so many other books. To be truly frugal, one could simply go to one of the many raw food sites (just do a search engine for 'raw food recipes'), and print out the wonderful free recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Answer for Me, August 12, 2009
How can one afford a raw lifestyle? How does one find the time to prepare the food? Where does one find simple recipes for delicious raw dishes?

FRUGAL RAW is the answer for me. Really, I have long wondered if it would be possible for me to "go raw." Thompson's book makes it all so possible, and greatly enjoyable. Recipes too simple? If they were more complicated, this book would not serve my needs.

And I think the guacamole recipe is wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for these economic times, January 12, 2009
This book is expensive. With all of the gourmet, labor intensive raw food books on the market this is a breadth of fresh air. It is expensive to eat raw. This book makes it afforable. The recipes are good and straight forward. I was able to do eat raw on $25 for a week per person. I think that is great.
