The Answer for Me,
This review is from: Frugal Raw!: Raw On The Cheap At Its Finest! (Paperback)
How can one afford a raw lifestyle? How does one find the time to prepare the food? Where does one find simple recipes for delicious raw dishes?
FRUGAL RAW is the answer for me. Really, I have long wondered if it would be possible for me to "go raw." Thompson's book makes it all so possible, and greatly enjoyable. Recipes too simple? If they were more complicated, this book would not serve my needs. And I think the guacamole recipe is wonderful.

This book is expensive. With all of the gourmet, labor intensive raw food books on the market this is a breadth of fresh air. It is expensive to eat raw. This book makes it afforable. The recipes are good and straight forward. I was able to do eat raw on $25 for a week per person. I think that is great.

Mattye presents raw simplistically, really and wonderfully. I completed the book thinking, "I can do this!" A must for all raw foodists and especially for neo-raw foodists. The information is practical for the economy we are in; oh and non-judgmental.
Try it you have nothing to lose [except fat, clogged arteries and stuff like that :-)]

A Must-Have in these Economic Times,

Due to the economic times, I was thinking about writing a book on how to eat raw on a low budget, when I realized one day that Mattye had beat me to it! And this woman is clearly qualified to write such a book, as she has the experience of being able to feed her husband and herself with $10-20 for three days on a healthful raw diet!
At first I was daunted by the price: $28 seemed expensive for a 166-page book, especially for those on a low budget! Then as I read it I realized that one chapter alone, "Shopping & Green Living--Tricks and Tips that Save You $$"--would more than pay for the book in one week! It's packed with much money-saving advice about where to shop, what foods to substitute the more expensive ingredients with, and lots of little tidbits I never would have imagined. She also gives a list of how to store each kind of food for maximum freshness! The reason, though, for the cost of the book, is that it is loaded with colorful photos of the recipes.(As an author, I know how expensive it is to print those, so the profit margin in this book is not great.) These pictures are mouth-watering and some of the recipes are astonishingly simple. Who could imagine a recipe for corn chips that would contain only 3 ingredients? And even though I am out of the raw gourmet recipe phase, I can't wait to make her matar paneer, which was my favorite cooked Indian dish! In addition to tips, recipes, and some of her personal story, the author gives us some tips on cleansing via fasting and juice feasting as well as an invaluable in-depth guide for sprouting. I highly recommend this to not only the novice raw fooder, but the seasoned one as well. This will keep the raw diet affordable as we weather the economic storms ahead. |
