From Booklist

For many, summer's gustatory raison d'etre is the season's bounty of fresh fruit. But in American supermarkets, it's not always possible to know which fruits are at their optimal ripeness. For those not blessed with easy access to an orchard or vineyard, Gorman comes to the rescue with Fruit: The Ripe Pick . Short of having one's own personal expert, Gorman's guide offers the next best thing: sound, simple instructions on picking the best produce, both common and exotic, that the market offers. She also surveys each fruit's nutritional content, seasonality, varieties, and storage advice. Every fruit also has a catalog of historical and scientific miscellany to round out its listing. A bibliography with Web sites adds to the book's utility. Mark Knoblauch

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely reference book for fruit lovers., July 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Fruit the Ripe Pick: Fruit Selection Made Easy! (Paperback)
This is the best book on fruit I've ever come across. If you love fruit but have trouble knowing how to pick out the best sweet juicy ripe stuff, this book will tell you exactly what to look for so you'll never be disappointed. The first watermelon I picked out after I got this book was fantastic. The mango, peaches, and grapefruit I bought were great too. Every fruit I've ever heard of is in here, along with some exotic ones I've never seen or tried. The language is simple and straightforward, yet very informative. I really enjoy the little stories behind each fruit, history and myths, that make the book fun to just sit and read. There are also helpful storage tips. Altogether, this is a book you can enjoy and really benefit from, in a beautiful little package.

2.0 out of 5 stars Really?, June 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fruit the Ripe Pick: Fruit Selection Made Easy! (Paperback)
This is a brief summary of information found in other places, taken too lightly, I don't know how it got rated so high when the only thing worth it on the whole book are the pages on the right, under "Did you know...

Most of the advice is very obvious when it comes to pick up ripe fruit or how to store it, things we know from TV shows, our grandmothers, the farmers market or even the grocery store tags next to the fruit price. These tags even tell you about how to prepare the produce.

This so called recomendations, underestimate the reader, not further research or anythiing else. I understand the book was aimed to homemakers but I think they deserve better, even Elmo can teach us more about fruits.

The positive side? the size of the book that homemakers said they take it to the store when buying fruit, is handy, convenient.

Better options?, check the many versions of "Field Guide to: meat, produce, fish etc"
by Aliza Green, I found this a better option, very solid information, lots of research and esay to read with simple illustrations and pictures. Eventhough you end up paying more, you will be more satisfied.

Nothing against the seller, book arrived promptly and in perfect conditions :-)
