5.0 out of 5 stars The TRUE Birth of Modest Mouse

Let me start off by saying this is my 3rd favorite Modest Mouse album, (1st Lonesome Crowded West, 2nd The Moon and Antarctica.)
I find this to be the album where modest mouse really established thier sound. Parts of "This is a long drive..." sound like a totally different band. Heres the tracklist:

(Skipping untitled tracks)

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice little Intorduction to a very promising band
This EP is the second but official MODEST MOUSE debut (their original intended debut by the name of SAD SAPPY SUCKER was scrapped by K Records and later re-released in light of the band's major label outing). It's a nice little introduction to a promising band. 9 tracks of very appealing emotional indie rock. "The Waydown" is a great track and the lo-fi sludge...

1.The Waydown- 9/10-very calm and cool way to start off with.

2.Dirty Fingernails-6/10-loud, but if you try to figure what Isaac's trying to put across...you'll understand.

3.Sunspots-10/10-great song, great lyrics. Isaac's voice sounds awsome on this song.

4.Fruit That ate itself-10/10-Latin percussion, heavy bass, shouting vocals, great lyrics,---recipe for an awsome song.

5.Summer-10/10-Great song about the freedom, energy, and crime that happens during the summer.

6.Karma's Payment-10/10- Best song to end the album with. Catchy rythym, simple yet inspiring lyrics, cool bass.

In conclusion, this a shorter modest mouse album...but more like-able. I'd much rather listen to this than long drive any day. If you are a modset mouse fan seeking for a new gem, this is it.

It's a nice little introduction to a promising band. 9 tracks of very appealing emotional indie rock. "The Waydown" is a great track and the lo-fi sludge of "Dirty Fingernails" is amazing. After that the record kind of spaces off and doesn't really go anywhere though..however you can certainly tell the band was headed for bigger and better things. Certainly not their best release.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Own, February 26, 2000

Just bought this. Full of pleasant surprises. If upon your first or second listen you don't find yourself bobbing your head with the music or feeling the urge to get up and dance then you better check your pulse - you might be dead. Cool, compelling grooves, very much unlike anything I've ever heard. These guys have the subtle complexity of Sonic Youth on Prozac, with shades of Beastie Boys and a strong dose of je ne sais quoi. The title track is just WAY COOL.

5.0 out of 5 stars this LIVES in my cd player, October 3, 1998

wow. this ep, by the Mouse from the Quah, is definitely worth listening to. the songs melt in your mouth like cotton candy. the riffs and melodies stick to your brain. the influence of built to spill and the pixies on this band is clearly evident, and the result is unbelievably wonderful. there is no good way to describe the truth of "karma's payment" or "the fruit that ate itself" or the joy of "summer." you'll just have to run out (yes! this is worth running for!) and listen for yourself. you will not be let down.

4.0 out of 5 stars A definate addition to the collection, June 17, 2000
This review is from: The Fruit That Ate Itself (Audio CD)
This is a conceptual piece most-definately, but one that works and in the long run that is all I am concerned with. Ringing in with a pulsating noise, this album evokes emotion in a way other Modest Mouse discs do also. But there is something about this album that makes me cherish it so. I think it has to do with its arangement, the way it all compliments itself so much. There is a collage of noises in this on one that makes such a beautiful landscape of music. There is the monotony that changes to beauty with "The Way Down" a hint of monotony that is muddled by the oceany sound of waves crashing on the 52second "Dirty Fingernails" that blends into the untitled song that is truly what the previous had established... the vocals hint at Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth but in a much more repressed, barred up, psychotic way... and the album continues on as so... but let's not forget the songs and the lyrics and the screaming and the noise and the atmosphere that Modest Mouse has created for us on this one.

This is exactly what it should be... not the beginning disc to a Modest Mouse collection, but a latter addition that any fan will love. These guys show us what they can do on this one.

"How do I land? I don't understand." MM

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Modest of Mice, November 14, 2001
By
Since the inevitable boom of popularity for this stellar philosophically intuitive, self-effacing, and sardonically humanistic trio, much of their music has been grabbed up, dissected, and annoyingly rewritten, into the mainstream of the 'this is cool, man,' world. This album, however, seems to have escaped detection, and happily, it stands as their most rugged and tempermental ode to trashy, mediocre living. Brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, November 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Only 5 of the tracks are actual songs, but of those 5, I could listen to four on repeat for an hour. I definitely recommend it to any Modest Mouse fan branching out past Moon and Antarctica and This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modest Mouse can eat some froot, December 7, 1999
This review is from: The Fruit That Ate Itself (Audio CD)
I love this band to mass amounts to begin with. "Dirty Fingernails" has to be my favourite on here. There is just something defiant about it. Like yeah, I have dirty fingernails, and they are in the bathroom and underneath the caserole......umm okay.....so yeah, get this EP is is wicked good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concept album a great complement to Modest Mouse's career, March 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fruit That Ate Itself (Audio CD)
a 'concept' album consiting of six songs rapped in shortened and distorted versions of themselves, "fruit that ate itself" is a powerful, compact place for modest mouse to end up. catchy songs played with confident innovations. certainly a different album from "long drive" yet the progression to this new sound can be heard in "lonesome crowded west." adds significant depth to the feel of modest mouse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but not for everyone, August 18, 2006
This review is from: The Fruit That Ate Itself (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful album and it shows us some of this amazing band's diversity, but not everyone will apreciate it. If you only like Good news for people who love bad news and Moon and Antarctica, then this isn't for you. It is much more raw and a lot stranger. If you do like this, then you will probably also like Long drive and Lonesome crowded, which is their best album and my personal favorite album period.
