Book Description

October 1, 1994
In Fruit Trees for the Home Gardener Allan A. Swenson shows you how, step by step, to plan, plant, and enjoy your own homegrown harvest: apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, cherries, and even nuts. Beginning with a careful selection of the most productive, tasty fruit varieties, Swenson will help you plan your fruit tree landscape - whether it's a full-blown orchard, or a single dwarf apple tree on your patio. You'll discover the secrets of soil improvement, planting, pruning, fertilizing, maintaining, and finally harvesting the fruits of your labors. This invaluable resource also includes methods of espalier (tree sculpture), facts about common threats that plague fruit trees and their remedies, tables for thinning fruit and spacing trees, and guidelines for freezing, canning, and making jam. An easy-to-use, wonderfully illustrated, mouth-watering guide, Fruit Trees for the Home Gardener will provide you with all the instruction and pointers you'll ever need to grow fruit trees successfully. Your garden and your table will be forever enhanced. (5 1/2 X 8 1/4, 182 pages, color photos, b&w photos, illustrations, charts)

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Swenson points out in his introduction that growing fruit trees is not as difficult as many gardeners believe. Some knowledge of planting, pruning, fertilizing, and caring for the trees is all that is needed. And this is what he offers, based on his personal gardening experience on his farm in Kennebunk, Maine. The fruits covered are apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, and cherries; nut trees are also included. Swenson also gives advice on espaliering and pest control. It's an excellent book for beginners, though it doesn't cover more advanced techniques such as grafting of fruits. The finished paperback will contain color photographs and line drawings. Review

Fruit Trees for the Home Gardner tells how to plan and plant a home harvest to obtain the best results. This includes many facets not covered in a more casual identification guide; from espalier to common tree problems and their remedies. Pruning, fertilizer and care pointers illustrate a good basic guide. -- Midwest Book Review
