Fruits and Berries,
By
This review is from: Fruits and Berries for the Home Garden (Paperback)
I am very happy with this book. It you are looking for information about any berry or fruit you will find it in this book. If there is something special you are looking for, it will have it. So far anything I have wanted to know I have been able to find it in this book. It will tell you anything about blueberries from planting to prunning. As far as fruit trees I have found all the info I want on apples, peaches, plums, grapes and much more. I would recamend this book to any one who is just beginning to plant berries and fruit to one who already has been doing it for a while.
Any one who buys this book will not be disapointed.

Lewis Hill seems like the type of guy you'd like to be neighbors with.
This book is very informative and I love his writing style. Instead of a "dry" text, Lewis draws you into the world of fruit like he is introducing you to his best friends. Although this is a great reference work, I read it all the way through because he is so engaging in his presentation of material. I got it thru the library but am buying it because it is worthy of a place on the shelf on any fruit grower. One small point to consider: if you are strictly organic you may be slightly disappointed. He takes a "middle of the road" approach to chemicals in the orchard. He try's to avoid them if possible and gives great advice on buying trees that won't need as much spraying. Highly recommended.

Fairly comprehensive and one of the best books I've seen. Has all the basic information on how to get started in gardening from soil considerations, space, and fertilizing to tree pruning, pests, and small orchard management. Great reference book for gardeners of any experience level. Covers brambles, vine fruits, strawberries, bush fruits, fruit trees, and nut trees. Wouldn't be without it.

Fruits and Berries for the Home Garden,

This book is just what I needed to help plan my new 'edible' landscape. It gives alot of good information in an easy to read formate. The author even remembered to list plants that will do best in hot zones as well as the cold zones. I have found that many books only tell you how cold tolerant a plant is, forgetting that in some areas (the deep South), heat tolerance is an important factor too.
All in all, a very nice book and well worth the price..

The basic information contained in this book isn't much better than what can be obtained online for free. A much better book for the Southern gardening is....
"The Southern Living Garden Book" This book has 26 plant selection guides that helps you to pick plants for your needs (drought tolerant plants and things like that) however I think the plant listings are this books best feature. There are over 5,000 plants with propagation and cultivation information. There are lots of photos too.

This is a very helpful book, because it goes into the kinds of soil you need to plant specific plants in, how to make the soil acid or alkaline, what you use, how to prune, and how to naturally make your plants resistant to pests and disease. Very entertaining. Reads a bit like a novel in places, which makes for more interesting reading.

Not only is this book a very good read, but the information is set up in a way that is easy to find and easy to understand. I am in the beginning stages of my orchard (just planted my trees last spring) and this book is by far my favorite. This book is very user friendly, and covers everything that you will need to know. The author takes the "middle of the road" approach to his orchard, so organic orchardis beware, he does recommend useing some sprays. If you only buy one book on orcharding or growing berries, this one to buy. Plus the recipies on the back of the book are excelent! my favorite is apple macaroon recipie my husband can't get enough of it.

I bought a few books on this subject when starting my little orchard. So far, this one is the best. The author explains things well, and covers a lot of territory. I'm sure I'll keep this book as a reference source.

I purchased it to know more about the berries I grow and how I can do better. Well, I like the style this book is written and it has a plethora of great information about almost all the berries which are available for the home gardener with easy, understandable advise. It is a great book for the beginner and also the more seasoned gardener.
A lot of useful tips and tricks. If you want a good book for a good price on this subject, in my humble opinion, this is it.

Good fruit-by-fruit review on virtually every bush, vine, and tree that can be planted in the backyard, told in a folksy style.
It's like listening to the old grandpa down the road share what he's learned in fifty years of orcharding. A fun book to read--- I only wish I had a bigger yard. |
