Now I can use the "fruits of the desert",

after living in San Diego for 20 years, I decided to return home. I missed the desert foods my grandmother use to prepare. So here I am and I have all this bounty at my doorstep. I never learned how to use it. So began my search for a cookbook that used "desert fruits" the way my family enjoyed them. I found many cookbooks, but the recipes were so complicated and were geared to the professional cook. I found this book @ Tohono Chul Park while browsing in the gift shop. It features delicious ways to use a prickly pears, saguaro fruit and taparey beans.

I would have liked more pictures in this book. Because of that I'd rank this book a low five. But that is a minor complaint. This book is full of yummy recipes that are easy to make. Some of the recipes are for canning but many of them are for enjoyment right away. The recipes require some unusual ingredients (such as tuna, the flower on a cactus). However, even though some of the ingredients might be unusual you can find some of the ingredients right in your grocery store, meaning that you do not have to live in the desert to enjoy this cookbook. There are recipes using grapefruit, blueberries and beans; for example you can probably find those in your local grocery store if you are not so fortunate to live where you can grow these things. Well worth the money. Enjoy.

This cookbook was recommended to me by a woman who makes all kinds of jellies from desert plants. She told me to check out Amazon since this cookbook is out of print. I did and I love this cookbook. I live in the desert and have access to almost all of the plant fruits mentioned in this book.
