Original rock'n'roll from the beginning to the end,
By Ana Lucia Machado (Rio de Janeiro, RJ Brazil) - See all my reviews

If you enjoy dancing to the original and basic rock'n'roll, you can't miss this album, which contains several classics from Brazilian rock'n'roll in the early 70's. Rita Lee and her post-Mutantes band, Tutti Frutti, perform the real rock in songs like "Luz del Fuego", "Dançar pra Não Dançar", "Agora Só Falta Você" and she also sounds bluesy in "Cartão Postal" and mellow in "Ovelha Negra", which many people credit it to be autobiographical. Her major influences are the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Her band Tutti Frutti is also in the spirit of performing the original rock. This album was extremely successful when it was released by 1975, however its songs are still up to date and they don't sound old. These hits are still performed and can be heard on the radio nowadays. It is a great chance to listen to the best of Brazilian rock performed by the best rock'n'roll artist in Brazil: Rita Lee. I can assure this because I have this CD and I can never have enough of listening to it.

Rita Lee was the very definition of the spirit of Rock n' Roll.
She was discriminated because of her use of Electric guitars back in the seventies, the perceived notion she was a sellout by playing rock instead of the more native music and also for poking fun of Brazilian musicians. Fruto Proibido (Forbidden Fruit) was her best album in my opinion. The audio transfer is not great, plagued with limited dynamics and noise, but it really does not matter. You must have this album! |
